(Aug. 19) \u0026gt;\u003cbr/\u003eThe more time Barack Obama serves as president, the more Americans become convinced _ incorrectly _ that Obama is a Muslim. \u003cbr/\u003eA new poll from the Pew Center Research Center shows that 18 percent of Americans believe Obama is a Muslim,\u003cbr/\u003eThat's up from 11 percent last March. \u003cbr/\u003eThere's a high coloration between those who believe Obama is a Muslim and those who don't agree with Obama's policies.\u003cbr/\u003eAlan Cooperman/Pew Research Center\u003cbr/\u003e\"It may be that for some of those people, it's just another way of registering their dislike or distrust for the president.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe poll's other key finding: 43 percent of Americans say they don't know what Obama's religion is, a nine point increase from last year. \u003cbr/\u003eAlan Cooperman of the Pew Research Center says some of the questions Americans have may come from the fact that Obama has not been particularly vocal about his faith compared to some previous presidents. \u003cbr/\u003eAlan Cooperman\u003cbr/\u003e\"some of the rumors, innuendo, other suggestions, misbelieves _ honest or dishonest _ may have been able to take root because there wasn't a strong counterveiling message from the White House.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe president has said repeatedly that he is a Christian who prays daily. \u003cbr/\u003eYet the rumors that he is a Muslim have followed him since the presidential campaign, fueled in part by the fact that he lived in Indonesia _ the world's largest Muslim country _ as a child or by his middle name, Hussein. \u003cbr/\u003eFor some Americans, the questions about the president's background still linger.\u003cbr/\u003e\"his name sounds Muslim.
