They asked me the coordinates. I gave them the coordinates. She didn't understand the 29 degrees, so many minutes, so many seconds. She only understood me reading the number back to her in one long number. I gave her that number, she kept putting us on hold constantly, and then she came back and asked me what restaurant I was close to. Obviously we're not near any restaurants, we're out in the bay, near an island, Cat Island. She didn't understand where Cat Island was, then she kept asking me what state I was in. She finally said 'I've got the coordinates, put the bird back in the water and we'll have somebody come pick it up'. Unbelievable.\"\u003cbr/\u003e16. Hahn handing oil-covered bird to member of Louisiana Fish and Wildlife rescue team which he called after attempting to call BP's hotline\u003cbr/\u003eIn Louisiana's picturesque Barataria Bay oil has continued to contaminate the water, seeping into marshes and wetlands, despite continued cleanup efforts to contain the oil leak caused by the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.\u003cbr/\u003eAbsorbent booms placed around the numerous islands have not stopped oil from reaching the wetlands, staining the marsh grasses with thick brown oil and causing devastation to the habitats of many birds and other wildlife.   \u003cbr/\u003eOnly a fraction of the estimated 69 (m) million gallons (261 (m) million litres) to 131.5 (m) million gallons (498 (m) million litres) of oil that have spewed into the Gulf have been recovered. \u003cbr/\u003eAbout 10 (m) million gallons (38 (m) million litres) of oil have been burned off, and 25 (m) million gallons (95 (m) million litres) of oil-water mix have been mopped up.\u003cbr/\u003eOil containment booms, mechanical skimmers and oil dispersants, the same tools used to fight the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska, are the staples being used in the two-month-long cleanup efforts.\u003cbr/\u003eBut oil spill experts say that despite some improvements in containment booms and skimmers, they're still limited in what they can do. \u003cbr/\u003eBooms generally work best in calm weather and waves, and need lots of maintenance.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Barataria Bay, some sections of boom have torn apart or doubled over, allowing oil to creep in and smother birds.\u003cbr/\u003ePlaquemines Parish coastal zone management director, P.J. Hahn, has been trying to rescue the distressed creatures.    \u003cbr/\u003eOn Saturday, he picked up a young crane covered in oil, found trying to clamber onto a protective boom near a nesting ground on Cat Island. \u003cbr/\u003eHahn called the Wildlife Distress Hotline, set up by the Joint Information Centre dealing with the oil slick response.\u003cbr/\u003eHahn spoke of his frustration, after the operator seemed unable to grasp where he was to send out a response team. \u003cbr/\u003e\"She finally said 'I've got the coordinates, put the bird back in the water and we'll have somebody come pick it up'. Unbelievable,\" Hahn added.\u003cbr/\u003eA BP spokesperson said the hotline operators were trained to record the location of the wildlife in distress.\u003cbr/\u003eExperts say the massive Gulf spill has exposed a failure by the oil industry and the US federal government to commit adequate resources to oil cleanup and response technology.\u003cbr/\u003eImprovements to the current methods used have been incremental and few new ones have been developed, critics say, because oil companies have no financial incentive.\u003cbr/\u003eBP has scrambled to try different cleanup techniques since the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded on 20 April, killing 11 workers and creating one of the US's worst environmental disasters.\u003cbr/\u003eThe company recently ordered 32 centrifuge devices made by a company co-founded by Hollywood actor Kevin Costner, who had invested about 24 (m) million US dollars in the project. \u003cbr/\u003eThe company says the largest of the devices can process about 210-thousand gallons (795-thousand litres) a day, separating oil gunk from water.\u003cbr/\u003eDeployed on barges, the centrifuges are intended to help skimmers work more efficiently by letting them unload the oil and water mix and cleaning it at sea instead of returning to port each time the tank is full.\u003cbr/\u003eAdvances in drilling technology have enabled a boom in exploration and drilling in deep waters, where lower temperatures and higher pressures require sophisticated equipment.\u003cbr/\u003eBut not much is known about how to collect oil from deep sea spills or how chemical dispersants used to break up oil behave at such depths, an official at the Coastal Response Research Centre said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Coastal Response Research Centre, based at the University of New Hampshire, is dedicated to developing new methods of responding to oil spills and cleaning up the environment after a spill.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv
