So, yes, I would be filling it out for myself and realised that some things were happening.\"\u003cbr/\u003eA study published in the medical journal Pediatrics earlier this year analysed data on over 17-hundred fathers from 16 large U.S. Cities.\u003cbr/\u003eThe men were questioned about depression symptoms, spanking and interactions with their one year old children.\u003cbr/\u003eThey weren''t asked why they spanked, or whether it resulted in physical harm.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe research concluded that seven per cent of dads had experienced recent major depression.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough a history of depression was known in some, in others the condition was tied to their child''s birth. \u003cbr/\u003eIlluminati says \"There was never a point when I wanted to hit him because at the time under one years old they don''t get it. But what I would do is just put him in his crib and kind of walk away and go punch a pillow or just go into another room and just kind of scream or just kind of raise my voice to myself.\"\u003cbr/\u003eDr. Carmine Pariante is leading the research on perinatal psychiatry here at the UK''s Institute of Psychiatry.\u003cbr/\u003eBecause of the direct biological communication between the mother and the foetus inutero, scientists have been able to track the physical effects of maternal depression on the baby.\u003cbr/\u003eThe children of depressed pregnant women are more likely to suffer mental health problems themselves according to psychiatry experts here.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Institute is involved with research with controlled groups tracking and comparing children''s long term academic performance to discover just how babies are affected by depression.\u003cbr/\u003ePariente confirms \"fathers do experience depression during the pregnancy and the post natal period and in particular between the three and six months after (the) baby is born. Up to perhaps a quarter of all fathers experience depressive symptoms. \u003cbr/\u003eThe mothers to be at this London hospital are enjoying antenatal classes.\u003cbr/\u003eThey haven''t been diagnosed with depression, nor have their partners, or husbands according to medical staff.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the hospital has been directly involved in research showing even feelings of anxiety during pregnancy can affect babies and now runs schemes to identify antenatal depression as soon as possible. \u003cbr/\u003eAlthough men aren''t physically attached to the child in the same way as the mother, Pariante says many of their experiences are similar.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They have a pervasive feeling of sadness, sometimes even just the crying that goes with it, problems with sleep, difficulty with appetite, the lack of enjoyment of things you would normally enjoy. These are quite common and may be present in both fathers and mothers in the same way.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut there are significant differences too.\u003cbr/\u003ePariente says \"the two roles are separate and fathers tend to have more irritability, males in general, not fathers, males in general tend to show more irritability.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAt Imperial College scientists have been concentrating studies on the placenta to examine whether stress hormones are gaining access to the foetus.\u003cbr/\u003ePariente says depression before and after birth has different effects.\u003cbr/\u003ePrenatal depression raises the risk of the illness in children, whereas \"mothers who are only depressed postnatally, their children still have problems, they usually, for example, have more problems at school and with performances in academic settings.\"\u003cbr/\u003ePariente says the reason is clear \"this is because of the unique problem we have when the mother is depressed during pregnancy and the baby being inutero during pregnancy.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIlluminati is now getting his life back to normal, but he can remember how hard it was to cope just a few months ago.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says \"when you first have the baby and you''re not sleeping right, you''re not eating right, eventually once that starts to level off and you get enough sleep, enough to eat you tend to feel a little bit better, whereas this, it didn''t matter, you know, if I did end up getting seven hours sleep, or if I was working out, or doing everything, you still feel, you know, you still feel that way.
