Children with Pope posters and balloons taking part in parade\u003cbr/\u003ePope Benedict XVI has arrived in Scotland for a four-day state visit to Britain, a controversial yet historic trip that has been overshadowed by sex abuse scandals which have shaken confidence in the Roman Catholic Church.\u003cbr/\u003eThe pope's first meeting on Thursday was with Queen Elizabeth II, both head of state and head of the Church of England, at The Palace of Holyrood House in Edinburgh, Scotland.\u003cbr/\u003eBenedict was warmly welcomed by the Queen as tartan-wearing bagpipers marched and thousands watched under cloud-streaked blue skies. \u003cbr/\u003eThe pontiff himself donned a green tartan scarf over his shoulders as he rode through Edinburgh in the Popemobile.\u003cbr/\u003eIn her remarks, the Queen told Benedict that his visit reminded all Britons of their common Christian heritage and said she hoped relations between the Anglican Church and the Catholic Church would be deepened as a result.\u003cbr/\u003eShe also praised the Catholic Church's \"special contribution\" to helping the poorest and most vulnerable people around the world.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Religion has always been a crucial element in national identity and historical self consciousness,\" she said.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This has made the relationship between the different faiths a fundamental factor in the necessary cooperation within and between nation states. Benedict's trip to Britain is a state visit because he was invited by the monarch.\u003cbr/\u003eSome 65-thousand are expected to attend an open air Mass at Bellahouston Park in Glasgow later on will follow on Sunday for Cardinal John Newman in Birmingham, which will see the 19th-century English philosopher take a step on his way to sainthood.\u003cbr/\u003eThe bookish pontiff lacks the charisma of his predecessor John Paul II, who pulled in a crowd of 250-thousand for Mass at the same Glasgow park. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are about 850-thousand Catholics in Scotland, according to the
