Tilt down from Dewdney watching snake to close of snake eating mouse
Australia is home to some of the world's most venomous snakes.
But as native animals, they're protected by law and cannot be killed.
Employees who risk encountering venomous snakes through their work have to be trained how to deal with them, so the market for snake-handling courses is growing.
It's lunchtime for this snake at a sanctuary in Echunga, South Australia.
Reptile researcher and breeder Sonia Dewdney has been working with venomous snakes for nine years.
At her property 35 kilometres (22 miles) south of Adelaide she keeps around 250 reptiles, including 150 snakes.
Dewdney breeds some of Australia's rarest native reptile species, and uses about 40 of her snakes to run training courses teaching people how to handle encounters with venomous snakes.
She says she enjoys working with reptiles because there's always something new to learn.
"There's very little known about a lot of aspects of the husbandry and the behaviour and the ecology of these animals."
Dewdney runs snake-handling courses across Australia.
The two-day training programme includes classroom sessions, first aid, and instruction in snake catching and relocation.
One of the first things the students are taught is that snakes are not aggressive animals, and are drawn to enclosed spaces for safety.
The students wear tough boots and lower leg protection, and are given the chance to get used to the presence of venomous snakes while they crawl around their feet.
Dewdney runs much of her training on location at Australia's vast mines in Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory.
She says the demand for her courses is driven by the legal requirement for employees who may encounter a snake at work to be trained to remove it safely.
"Australia's got some of the most venomous snakes in the world here, and there are a lot of areas in Australia, mainly remote areas, where people do come across snakes. And there are a number of situations, whether it's trenching or servicing well-heads or that sort of thing, where personnel may encounter venomous snakes which will then need to be removed," he says.
Marcus Raynor keeps non-venomous snakes as pets, and wants to broaden his knowledge of other species.
"I've been keeping reptiles for about 20 years and I haven't had a lot to do with the venomous stuff, so doing the course with Sonia was a good chance to get some hands-on experience with venomous stuff, and I'd like to further my knowledge in that."
Kevin Dalton says that doing the course has changed his attitudes towards snakes.
"It was nice to get hands-on experience with a snake, and I feel a lot more comfortable now in the presence of a snake. They're not aggressive animals, you know. You respect themthey respect you."
Dewdney believes that demand for snake-handling courses will only increase.
She's received enquiries from as far afield as West Africa, and such training could soon be big business beyond Australia.
Around 100 species of Australian snakes are venomous, but only 12 are likely to inflict a fatal wound.
