popular with European tourists for its sandy beaches and desert oases - set off a series of similar uprisings against entrenched leaders, an event now being called the Arab Spring. \u003cbr/\u003eIf Tunisia's elections produce an effective new government they will serve as an inspiration to pro-democracy advocates across the region, including next-door Libya.\u003cbr/\u003eThe campaign season has been marked by controversies over advertising, fears over society's religious polarisation and concerns about voter apathy, but a mood of optimism and excitement in the capital was palpable.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I have never felt anything like that in all my 40 years, to decide the future of your country, there is nothing better than that,\" said Tunis resident Dia Treki.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are 7.5 million potential voters, though only 4.4 (m) million of them, or just under 60 percent, are actually registered.       \u003cbr/\u003eA proportional representation system will likely mean that no political party will dominate the assembly, which is expected to be divided roughly between the Ennahda party, centrist parties and leftist parties, requiring coalitions and compromises during the writing of the constitution.\u003cbr/\u003eTunisia's newly elected assembly held its inaugural meeting on November 22nd, ready to start shaping the constitution and the democratic future of the country that sparked the Arab Spring uprisings.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd it didn't take long for the legislators to feel one result of free speech: hundreds of people protested outside Parliament, demanding everything from women's rights and a crackdown on security forces to limits on Qatar's influence over Tunisia's affairs.\u003cbr/\u003eA moderate Islamist party, Ennahda (Renaissance), won the most seats in Tunisia's Constituent Assembly, and has announced a coalition with a liberal and a left-of-centre party, but groups representing the country's secular traditions picketed the assembly's first meeting expressing their fears of an Islamist takeover.\u003cbr/\u003eLawmakers were elected in October in Tunisia's first free vote - the first one resulting from the Arab Spring protests.\u003cbr/\u003eTunisian protesters drove out their long-time president in January, setting off revolts in other Arab countries.\u003cbr/\u003eTunisia's new assembly is being watched as an example amid the violence in Egypt ahead of its elections and escalating tensions in Syria.\u003cbr/\u003eTunisia has been spared the violent clashes of its North African and Arab neighbours, but there has been some continued unrest. \u003cbr/\u003eOutside the assembly building in a suburb of Tunis, one thousand people demonstrated from dozens of different associations, many representing women calling for their rights to be guaranteed in the new constitution.\u003cbr/\u003eUnder dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, Tunisia had some of the most progressive laws for women in the Arab world, something its secular elite fear might be lost under an Islamist party.\u003cbr/\u003eEnnahda, as well as its coalition members, has promised to maintain women's rights.\u003cbr/\u003eThe coalition, which holds 139 of the 217 seats, will present the assembly its candidate for interim president, veteran rights activist Moncef Marzouki who heads the liberal Congress for the Republic Party. \u003cbr/\u003eHe will then appoint a prime minister, Ennahda's No. 2, Hammadi Jebali, and Mustapha Ben Jaafar of the Ettakatol Party as the leader of assembly.\u003cbr/\u003eThe North African country of 10 (m) million people has been essentially a one-party state since it won its independence from France in 1956, yet it was able to organise a successful election accepted by all participants in just four months.\u003cbr/\u003eTunisia -
