Interior of the NASA control centre \u003cbr/\u003eNASA launched a a new satellite on Monday designed to measure ultraviolet light from distant galaxies in an effort to better understand their origins.\u003cbr/\u003eMonday's launch was the first since the space shuttle Columbia disintegrated over Texas on February 1.\u003cbr/\u003eThe satellite was launched with the help of a Pegasus rocket dropped from a specially designed L-1011 Stargazer jumbo jet flying about 100 nautical miles from Cape Canaveral.\u003cbr/\u003eThe modified aircraft took off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at 7:03 a.m. Monday, carrying the 55-foot-long rocket strapped to its belly. \u003cbr/\u003eAn hour after lift-off, the winged rocket was released at an altitude of 39-thousand feet and allowed to free-fall for five seconds before the first stage of the Pegasus solid rocket fired, propelling the spacecraft into orbit.\u003cbr/\u003eThe heart of the Galaxy Evolution Explorer spacecraft, or GALEX, is a 19.7-inch diameter telescope that will provide a wide-angle view of the ultraviolet light emitted by distant galaxies. \u003cbr/\u003eBy measuring the ultraviolet light over a period of 28 months, astronomers hope to learn more about galaxies dominated by young, hot, short-lived stars that give off a great deal of energy at that wavelength.\u003cbr/\u003eAstronomers believe that by learning more about these young stars, they can map out the history of star and galaxy formation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe satellite will go through a month long inspection before it begins gathering data. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter the information has been checked it is to be released publicly to allow scientists worldwide to consider its implications.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists put the overall cost of this
