Young boys watching ceremony\u003cbr/\u003eA remote tribe in a mountain village in Senegal live by their traditions as best they can.\u003cbr/\u003eAll the boys of the village must go through an initiation ceremony in order to become men.\u003cbr/\u003eModern life, however, means that many of the traditions are hard to maintain.\u003cbr/\u003eIn South eastern Senegal, near the town of Kedegou, a tribe of animist (someone who believes in Animism, the belief that all living things have a personalised soul) farmers from neighbouring Mali (African country) fled religious persecution hundreds of years ago and found sanctuary on top of this mountain.\u003cbr/\u003eHere about 200 villagers, called \"Bedik\" by the outside world, live as they have done for centuries, practicing their animist beliefs, which are now mixed with the form of Christianity that was brought to Africa by missionaries (people who preached Christianity to try to convert non-believers).\u003cbr/\u003eIn the village, the women and men play very separate roles.\u003cbr/\u003eOn the eve of the traditional 'initiation to manhood' ceremony, the women prepare food, while the men wait for the boys who entered the bush to emerge as men.\u003cbr/\u003eJean-Pierre Camara, a villager, says he remembers clearly the day he was one of the initiates:\u003cbr/\u003e\"The day I was in the woods like those boys I did not know what was happening, and I no longer knew what I was doing.  They showed me things. It was like I was with a genie.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe young teenage men (aged 13 to 19 years old) emerge from the woods after several days. The villagers claim the boys will have had mystical encounters.\u003cbr/\u003eOn their return, the newly initiated are carried by the youths who became men before them.\u003cbr/\u003eThe villagers say that the mystical encounters makes the boys too weak to stand.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is just the beginning of a process which takes several months and which requires the initiates to drop out of school and devote themselves to learning how to be a man.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are taught hunting, family life and a language that only men can understand. They will be kept essentially secluded from their families and from women during this time.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are taken to a hut where they will rest in preparation for the next day - their first day as men.\u003cbr/\u003eThe next morning begins early as villagers prepare for a day of celebration.  Traditionally the initiates are expected to come out of the hut and dance to show their strength is coming back.\u003cbr/\u003eThose who became men in recent initiation ceremonies guard the hut of the new initiates because they are said to be vulnerable to evil spirits at this time.\u003cbr/\u003eVillagers deny that their village has changed with the times, but there are some things that are clearly modern.  \u003cbr/\u003eChristian missionaries installed a new well and villagers now practice a combination of Christianity and animism.\u003cbr/\u003eTourists have also begun to visit the village to see how the Bedik live.\u003cbr/\u003eChief of the Bedik, Bruno Kieta says he does not like when people leave the village and do not return.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ceremony has also changed. Young men are no longer circumcised in the bush as part of the ceremony, but instead in hospitals because of health concerns.\u003cbr/\u003eMany are circumcised at the nearest medical centre in Kedegou.\u003cbr/\u003eThe age of circumcision can be at any time between infancy and teenage years (13 to 19 years old).\u003cbr/\u003eDr. Cheikh Niang who works at the centre, says:\u003cbr/\u003e\"The people must do their ceremony even if they bring their children to the hospital for circumcision, afterwards they'll do a different ceremony according to their customs.  They'll receive a base education for everything it means to be a man.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWomen prepare food for the men and display handicrafts hoping tourists will climb the hill to come buy traditional jewellery or dolls.\u003cbr/\u003eAngel Kante says the money she earns from selling these items is used to send her children into the city for education.\u003cbr/\u003eLast year's initiates in the manhood ceremony did not stay in the village for the several-month-long process, but returned to school. Many village men say that was a mistake, and they will not let it happen again.\u003cbr/\u003eAngel Kante does not agree. She says it is better for children to be in school:\u003cbr/\u003e\"It is better to leave. If you have a little money, you will take that money and pay for your child to continue at school.
