He got the idea from looking at the very upper class ladies of the day who were probably suffering from all sorts of skin problems and used to put little spots of colour on their faces to make themselves look beautiful. So he rather took the mickey out of them by painting his face similarly. And instead of wearing this Harlequin costume, he would wear a costume that was similar to any tradesman or something of the day and perform on the theatre various sort of masquerades and because he was the one man who broke the mould, all clowns who followed him, tended to almost imitate him.\"\u003cbr/\u003e30. Holy Trinity church in East London to celebrate the life of Joseph Grimaldi, Britain's most famous clown. \u003cbr/\u003eThis year's event also marked the 60th anniversary of Clowns International, the world's oldest established clowns' organisation.\u003cbr/\u003eA chorus of 'Happy Birthday' fills the aisles, and a clown jumps out of huge birthday cake made from balloons. \u003cbr/\u003eThis is special birthday party, and remembrance service, for the father of British clowns, Joseph Grimaldi. \u003cbr/\u003eClowns from across the UK and other parts of the world gather every year to take part in a tradition that started in 1946. \u003cbr/\u003eJoseph Grimaldi who was born in London in 1779, and died in 1837.\u003cbr/\u003eHe was the first clown to take the tradition of the character of Harlequin and  transform it into the modern clown, mostly because everyone else copied his style. \u003cbr/\u003eGrimaldi's first name became a common nickname for clowns 'Joey'. \u003cbr/\u003eSince 1967 clowns attending the service have been allowed to wear their full costumes, and most clowns arrive a few hours before the service to dress up, and most importantly, to apply their elaborate make up.\u003cbr/\u003eGordon, whose clown name is 'Rainbow', has been a clown for 13 years.\u003cbr/\u003eHe describes what inspired his face, which is unique to each clown, saying as no one recognises him without his make up, it is like being a double agent. \u003cbr/\u003e'Rainbow' is the chairman of Clowns International, which is the world's oldest clown group. \u003cbr/\u003eThe group has about 300 members, a third of which are outside the UK including North America, Germany and New Zealand.\u003cbr/\u003eClowns can join as Full Members, under 16's are encouraged to join as Junior Clowns, and the general public can also join as Friends Of Clowns. \u003cbr/\u003eGary (whose clown name is 'Sunny) describes what it takes to become this kind of entertainer.\u003cbr/\u003eBut becoming a clown isn't always an easy option. \u003cbr/\u003eOne of the women clowns attending the ceremony, 'Ganma Clown',  says that although some people are aggressive towards her, she gets a lot of satisfaction from the mainly positive reactions she gets from most members of the public.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe service ends with a wreath being laid in memory of Joseph Grimaldi, who has a tapestry devoted to him in one corner of the church. \u003cbr/\u003eCandles are lit for the famous clown and for other clowns who have died in the last year.\u003cbr/\u003eNear the church is a small museum devoted to the art of 'clowning' . \u003cbr/\u003eThe Clowns Gallery and Museum was founded in 1960 by Clowns International to house a display of pictures and artifacts relating to clowning and its history from earliest times. \u003cbr/\u003eThe museum also displays props, costumes and a plethora of clown related items including a literary archive.\u003cbr/\u003eInside the museum, Tony Eldridge (whose clown name is Bluebottle), the Secretary of Clowns International, shows how Grimaldi invented the make up and costume that all modern clowns have taken inspiration from.  \u003cbr/\u003eJoseph Grimaldi is said to have appeared on stage for the first time when he was just three years old with his father at the famous London theatre, Sadler's Wells. \u003cbr/\u003eHe is said to have been immediately popular with audiences from his debut in 1806 in Mother Goose at Covent Garden. \u003cbr/\u003eEldridge (Bluebottle) shows off a colourful display of painted eggshells and explains how each one shows the face used by a different clown.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says that an unwritten rule states that no clown can copy the make-up design used by another clown. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen a clown dies, so does his face. \u003cbr/\u003eAs part of the annual tradition, the church service is followed with a performance of various clown acts at the school hall across the road from the church.
