We have works that represent around 11 Arab nationalities that we shipped from more than 25 countries so it is a rare chance that only happens every six months with works that are truly unique,\" says Khayat.\u003cbr/\u003eThe day has become the most successful for Christie's auction house in Dubai since 2010, with 19 new records broken for some of the artists up for sale including Hamed Ewais, Shafic Abboud, Bahman Mohassess, Koorosh Shishegaran and Samia Halaby. \u003cbr/\u003eKhayat says it's only recently that Arab art has achieved such popularity.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Arab art has existed for hundreds of years and Christie's didn't add to that art but Christie's turned the spotlight on this art on the global stage,\" she says. \u003cbr/\u003e\"When a traditional house like Christie's comes along, that was established 1766 and that is 300 years old, this makes the world take notice of Arab art and to spread it.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe highest bid went on a Mahmoud Said painting that sold for 889,000 US dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother highlight was a Parviz Tanavoli oil painting which sold for 365,000 US dollars - six times over its estimate, says a Christie's press release following the sale. \u003cbr/\u003eMost of the buyers are Middle Eastern private collectors but Khayat says that since Christie's opened an office in Dubai there has been an increase in international art collectors travelling to Dubai to add to their own collections. \u003cbr/\u003e\"In 2006, there was really only an interest for the auction from locals because people from the west didn't really know that there was an Arab art movement,\" she says. \u003cbr/\u003eAuction after auction we saw that the number really increased.
