Wide tilt up Viacom building near Times Square\u003cbr/\u003eViacom joined the growing number media companies axing large numbers of employees on Monday.\u003cbr/\u003eViacom - which owns BET, Famous Music, MTV Networks, Paramount Pictures and more than 120 networks around the world - announced that 250 employees from MTV Networks will be let go. \u003cbr/\u003eViacom says it will be investing more heavily in digital businesses and other new ways to reach the public.\u003cbr/\u003eAs the internet and the public's appetite for online video content continue to shake up the media world, jobs are being slashed and structures shaken up. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Old\" media - newspapers and now even television - are losing customers and advertising revenue to new media, and they are scrambling to keep up.\u003cbr/\u003eMedia giant Viacom has been changing since last Autumn when Viacom Chairman Sumner Redstone bid his CEO farewell, according to Forbes.com's media writer Louis Hau.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The company's been in a period of transition now since Tom Freston, the CEO, was ousted back in September by chairman Sumner Redstone,\" Hau explained. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Internally there's a lot of reshuffling going on and of course it's all happening at a time when Viacom, along with all the other media companies out there, are trying to come up with a coherent strategy of how to get their content online in a lucrative way.\" he added.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cuts do not mean that the MTV Network channels are not as popular as before, Hau said. \u003cbr/\u003eAdvertising revenues are down a little, but Viacom isn't considering cutting any content. \u003cbr/\u003eInstead, the media giant is working to cut costs by combining \"back room\" jobs like human resources and accounting at the same time as it investigates ways to continue to develop its online strategy and presence.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's enormously popular content but they're at a time right now where revenue growth has been pretty decent but there have been some signs of slowing advertising growth, so Viacom is really looking for a way to jump-start growth and profitability over at MTV networks,\" Hau noted.\u003cbr/\u003eViacom is far from alone in cutting costs by cutting jobs.\u003cbr/\u003eJust last week, Discovery Communications said it would be \"restructuring,\" and last fall NBC Universal said it would eliminate some 700 employees with its cost-cutting plan. \u003cbr/\u003eHau said he expects the cuts and shake-ups to continue as media businesses and the public try to figure out where, how and when media products should and can be consumed.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The market's shifting on a seemingly day-to-day basis these days and you do see all these media companies, like Viacom, like the other major TV networks, posting a ton of content on line that just wasn't there even as recently as a year ago.
