Internet Protocol, is a method for taking the same audio signals that you hear when talking on the phone, and turning them into digital data  that can be transmitted over the Internet. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd while traditionally you have to sit in front of the computer to make calls for free, handheld phone sets are now being introduced to give the freedom of moving about.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough making inexpensive long distance calls over the internet is not new to many people, being able to walk around while doing so is.\u003cbr/\u003ePhilips Electronics is introducing handsets that allow for calls to be made using VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) from anywhere in the house.\u003cbr/\u003eVoIP uses a broadband network as opposed to a landline, which means calls can be made at not cost, according to Director for Public Relations company for Philips Electronics, CMC, Andrew Burslem.\u003cbr/\u003eVoIP takes the same audio signals that you hear when talking on the phone and turns them into digital data  that can be transmitted over the Internet. \u003cbr/\u003eUsing the internet to make calls for free is already hugely popular.\u003cbr/\u003eOne London resident, Pete Switaliski, says VoIP allows for him to keep in touch with friends and family in Europe, the States and around the world for virtually no cost.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says that otherwise the expense of long distance calls would be too high. \u003cbr/\u003eThe product claims to combine the concept of free long distance phone calls over the internet with the convenience of walking around the house. \u003cbr/\u003eAlthough these specialised phones look like normal phones with a handset, cradle and buttons, they work with an ethernet connector allowing for calls to be made using the internet.\u003cbr/\u003eThe phones connect directly to an internet router and have all the hardware and software necessary to handle the calls. \u003cbr/\u003eBurslem says that in order to use the phones, a transponder is plugged into a computer and then the phone's software automatically loads onto the computer.\u003cbr/\u003eOnce online, Burslem says it's easy to search for the person you want to call and then simply place the call. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the biggest advantages are the mobility and privacy the phone allows, according to a London resident and regular VoIP user, Chiara Sarzi Amade.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cordless phones, which also work as regular telephones, are set to hit the UK market later this month. \u003cbr/\u003eWorldwide there were 1.3 million (m) subscribers of VoIP services at the beginning of 2005, according to a survey by analysis firm TeleGeography (USA). \u003cbr/\u003eIt's estimated that another 900,000 have signed up for VoIP services within the last three months alone. \u003cbr/\u003eVoIP technology has also moved beyond the home and into the Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity) arena, making it possible to speak to anyone around the world from a wireless hotspot.\u003cbr/\u003eFollowing the wireless developments, soon, Wi-Fi phones will also be available, allowing callers to make VoIP calls from any Wi-Fi hot spots.
