Various of train departing for Milan \u003cbr/\u003eItalian Premier Silvio Berlusconi faced a tough challenge Friday and a potential blow to his popularity in the crisis of Alitalia, on the brink of collapse after a group of investors withdrew an offer to buy it.\u003cbr/\u003eBerlusconi, who returned to power after winning April elections, has promised he would rescue Alitalia and keep it in Italian hands.\u003cbr/\u003eAll eyes were on the Italian Premiere as he met with his French counterpart Francois Fillon in Rome on Friday knowing that any failure to rescue the airline will be a major embarrassment for him.\u003cbr/\u003eHe opposed an earlier takeover bid by Air France-KLM, which had been negotiated under the previous centre-left government.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said foreign ownership of Italy's flagship company would hurt the country's prestige and its tourism industry.\u003cbr/\u003eAlitalia was declared bankrupt late last month, making way for the offer by the Italian investors to buy profitable assets.\u003cbr/\u003eBerlusconi blamed unions for not supporting the plan, prompting the investors to walk away. \u003cbr/\u003eOut of Alitalia's nine unions, six refused to give their approval to the plan, including ones representing pilots and flight attendants. \u003cbr/\u003eAlitalia pilots and passengers on Friday expressed their frustration at the failure to find a solution to save the airline, after a deal to save the airline fell through on Thursday.\u003cbr/\u003eAlitalia Pilot Giovanni Montagnari, speaking on Friday at Rome's Fiumicino Airport, said Alitalia was a safe and reliable airline.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We aren't making money and we need to investigate why, apart from these last few days when flights haven't been full,\" he added.\u003cbr/\u003eOne passenger sarcastically said the situation was \"just another sign of the efficiency of this government.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAntonio Di Vietri, President of AVIA, the Italian flight attendants' association, said the livelihoods of 20-thousand families were at stake.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Someone irresponsible said that Alitalia was to stop operating starting on Monday. The service is expected to be guaranteed over the weekend - leaving the government to scramble for an alternative solution. \u003cbr/\u003eSome called for a reopening of talks between the investors
