They would habitually follow her and taunt her whenever she left home, hissing lewd comments at her.\u003cbr/\u003eMukherjee stood up to them and threatened to go to the police.\u003cbr/\u003eThis simple act of defending herself was enough to make the gang plan a life changing revenge attack. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the early hours of one morning the men sneaked into Mukherjee's home and poured acid over her face while she slept:  \"They (perpetrators) came at 2 am when we (Sonali and her family) were asleep on the roof and threw a big jug full of acid on me. They threw all the acid on me and burnt me. I had 70 percent burns. What I was feeling at the point, how my skin was burningï¿½I cannot even express.  I didn't  realise what had happened. By the time I started realizing, I was unconscious.\" she says. \u003cbr/\u003eThe attack left her blind and partially deaf. \u003cbr/\u003eMukherjee says she wasn't given proper first aid or treatment in her city at the time as even the medical professionals didn't know how to treat an acid attack victim.\u003cbr/\u003eNumerous surgeries followed, media channels came forward, NGOs helped her, her family stood by her and with this support she was able to make it through her horrendous ordeal.\u003cbr/\u003eIn all Mukherjee has undergone 28 surgical procedures over ten years. The battle to survive is a tough one, which can leave its own scars:\u003cbr/\u003e\"In my experience, we have to fight on multiple levels. First, the victim has to battle the pain physically, then they are battling mentally, battling emotionally and financially also. The victims who come from poor families, financial challenges are major.\"\u003cbr/\u003e24 year old Laxmi, who is known by just one name, was doused with acid eight years ago after ignoring repeated overtures from a man more than 25 years her senior. She says Indian law is failing women: \"The one who attacked me, what did he get and what did I get? He got arrested after four days of the attack and was bailed out after a month,\" Laxmi says. \u003cbr/\u003eNow, she says, her attacker has married and has a child.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Where is justice? Where is the law? Nowhere,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eKamlesh Jain, a lawyer who represents acid attack victims, says the poor are particularly vulnerable after an attack as they do not have the funds to pursue legal action:\u003cbr/\u003e\"In our country I also find that the police doesn't take that much interest where the victim is so weak, financially and otherwise, so in some cases, the cases are not pursued and even if the case is pursued, the sentence awarded until now is very very less and is not sufficient to tackle this problem,\" says Jain.\u003cbr/\u003eLaxmi has also vociferously campaigned against banning the sale of over-the-counter acid.\u003cbr/\u003eHighly concentrated acids are readily and cheaply available in India for use as household and industrial cleaners. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter years of campaigning, the Supreme Court, in July this year prohibited the sale of acid unless the seller maintains a record of the buyers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe law also ordered states to pay acid attack victims $1,400 in compensation.\u003cbr/\u003eNow, Mukherjee and other victims of acid attacks are pressing the Indian government to do more to prevent such violence, saying a new law aimed at restricting the sale of dangerous chemicals is being ignored.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The Supreme Court has given this judgment after 7 years. The government is supposed to execute this. But until now, the policy has not even reached the shops, that over-the-counter acid sale should be regulated. They are still asking for time,\" says Laxmi.\u003cbr/\u003eLaxmi volunteers with a campaign group called \"Stop Acid Attacks\" which was started by Alok Dixit after he felt that there was no voice against acid violence.\u003cbr/\u003eIn response to their campaign, the Indian Supreme Court Dec. 3) ordered all states to show compliance with the law, which went into effect after a deadly gang rape in New Delhi last year galvanized public anger over violence toward women.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Many acid attack victims have died on the spot, some have died in the hospital. This is burning someone out in the open. This is not an ordinary crime where you give ordinary punishments. The court cases for such crimes can't drag for 8 or 10 years like it does with normal crimes,\" Dixit says.\u003cbr/\u003e\" We wanted to tell the government all these things because this was never given importance before. Nobody was talking about this cause and we started the campaign mainly to create awareness and to talk about acid violence.\" \u003cbr/\u003eLaxmi was helped by her family and her father's employer at the time of the attack.\u003cbr/\u003eKnowing how difficult it is for an acid attack victim and the trauma they go through, she now uses her experience to help other victims.\u003cbr/\u003eLaxmi and the other volunteers are helping another victim , who does not wish to be identified, create puppet shows through which she can tell her story to the public.\u003cbr/\u003eThis victim was attacked by her own family member and is not confortable showing her face, \u003cbr/\u003eThe survivors are faced with mounting lifelong medical expenditures.\u003cbr/\u003eThey say that each surgery runs into hundreds of dollars, and even if the government's compensation of around $1400 is granted it still won't be enough.\u003cbr/\u003eMukherjee says she struggled with her identity for years after the attack, at one point even asking the courts to allow her to commit suicide.\u003cbr/\u003eEuthanasia is illegal in India and her plea was rejected.\u003cbr/\u003eBut now, she says she is coming to terms with her future, especially knowing that her attackers have served only three years in prison and are now free.\u003cbr/\u003eMukherjee says that society exonerates them while the victims' scars amount to a lifetime sentence for many women.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I have seen many times when the victim is completely cut off from the society,\" says Mukherjee, \u003cbr/\u003e\"I have been saying this to myself, 'Why should I feel ashamed? Why should my family be ashamed? Why should I hide my face? Why should I hide myself in a closed room? When the criminals who did this to me are free, wearing fancy sunglasses and driving around in a car, why should I hide myself in a room?\"\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the acid attack patients keep pushing the government to get free treatment for other survivors, they feel what's more important is a social change to help deal with such violent crimes against women.  \u003cbr/\u003eSome 1,500 acid attacks are reported worldwide every year, according to the London-based charity Acid Survivors Trust International. \u003cbr/\u003eThe group says the figure is likely far higher because so many victims are too scared to speak out.\u003cbr/\u003eIndia has no official statistics, but reports of acid attacks appear regularly in the Indian media. \u003cbr/\u003eThe attackers tend to target the head and face in order to maim, disfigure and blind their victims, often because of spurned sexual advances.\u003cbr/\u003eNew Delhi, 2 September 2013\u003cbr/\u003e1.
