Wearing a hanfu is more than wearing traditional clothes, it represents all our culture.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eThe founder of the \"Hanfu She\" association is a 21 year-old economic student, called Wang Tingting. \u003cbr/\u003eTwo years ago she gave up her modern dress in favour of the traditional Han robes - and she's sparked a trend.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Han society is seen as an alternative to the K-pop and J-pop movement, where students emulate Korean and Japanese pop music respectively. \u003cbr/\u003eTingting wants to remind people that Japan and Korea owe many of their cultural items to Chinese export.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The Han culture has a very large place in the traditional Chinese culture. Nowadays, the Japanese and the Korean people know how to protect and to promote their traditions. But their traditions were inspired by Chinese culture. What people see as Japanese or Korean actually sometimes came from China. So we really want to protect and promote our brilliant 5000 year-old culture,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eWhatever the weather, she comes to class with her long traditional kimono. She lives on a campus dormitory, but despite the tiny proportions of her room, she still manages to collect the long, flowing hanfu dresses. \u003cbr/\u003eShe now has more than 20 dresses - but despite their authentic look, they still need to be adapted to the rigours of modern student life. \u003cbr/\u003e\"These days we don't use the same textiles. We use chiffons and worsted textiles for the winter that did not exist during the Han dynasty. At this period, they used more silk or cotton. Decorations and patterns also are not the same. The aesthetic models have changed so we need to adapt hanfu to modern style,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eFor each item, she spends between 16 USD (100RMB) to 27 USD (170RMB). \u003cbr/\u003eAs a modern \"hanfu-girl\", she buys her clothes on-line shopping website as Taobao, which has the largest selection.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Hanfu She are based in Nanjing city - a former imperial capital. \u003cbr/\u003eJiang Haifeng opened a little hanfu-shop a few years ago in the downtown old city. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says more and more young people are coming to his shop. \u003cbr/\u003e\"More and more people hear talk of hanfu. Before, wearing hanfu was seen as something weird. But now it is more common. Most of my customers buy it to wear in their daily lives. Some clients also want wear it for a special event, such as their wedding, or coming of age ceremony, for example. there are also students leaving abroad to study and order an hanfu to show their Chinese identity to foreign countries,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Zheng Zhen, a professor at the School of Social and Behavioural Sciences at Nanjing University, the trend for hanfu clothes shows that young Chinese people want to be proud of their country. \u003cbr/\u003eHe explains that \"Western countries - but also Japan and Korea - spread their culture in our country. But this international penetration leads some young Chinese people to ask themselves : what is the Chinese culture? Hence, they try to redefine national culture, to protect it and to promote it.
