It is our chance to usher, in a due age of green economics and truly sustainable development,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe conference in Bali, which ends on Friday, is aimed at launching two-year negotiations toward a new global warming agreement to take over from Kyoto in 2012. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever, the joint Nobel Peace Prize winner Al Gore, in accepting his award earlier this week in Oslo indicated that he wanted the protocol to come into force much sooner than 2012.\u003cbr/\u003eRecent environmental disasters, like that in Bangladesh have demonstrated the need for climate change to be taken seriously. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd Ban picked up on this theme by pointing out that although climate change affects everyone, it did not affect countries equally. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Those who are least able to cope are being hit hardest. We have an ethical obligation to right this injustice,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eA version of a revised conference document obtained by The Associated Press on Tuesday included guidelines for industrialised countries to cut emissions by between 25 percent and 40 percent overall by 2020. \u003cbr/\u003eThe final document is expected to be released on Friday.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, the United States (US) and other countries, including Japan, oppose parts of the the language in the document, kickstarting lengthy negotiations for a new pact. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Europe Union strongly supports the guidelines, and Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd said that his country now \"stands ready to assume its responsibility\" in responding to the challenge of climate change.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We believe that climate change represents one of the greatest moral, economic and environmental challenges of our age. said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe new document is calling for the consideration of actions by developing countries to control emissions. \u003cbr/\u003eSuch countries, led by high-polluter China, maintain that rich countries should take the first steps, while poorer nations put their emphasis on economic development.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Kyoto Protocol requires 36 industrialised to cut emissions by an average of 5 percent below 1990 levels between 2008 and 2012. \u003cbr/\u003eEven supporters concede, however, that these steps are not enough and a deeper cuts are needed soon to stop a destructive rise in
