Various of theatre group doing a performance in Tupi-Guarani language \u003cbr/\u003eThe Brazilian Bank Cultural Centre is staging an art exhibition in Rio de Janeiro which pays tribute to the Amerindian civilisations, whose cultures contributed to the formation of Brazilian culture. \u003cbr/\u003eFrom small sculptures and artifacts to huge figures sculpted in stone, from masks in precious metals to textiles and panel paintings, the exhibition - Por Ti America - tells the story of life in the Americas before the arrival of Columbus and Cabral.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the entrance of the exhibition, a huge video installation shows pictures of the location of the pre-Columbian civilisations. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's the largest art exhibition of its kind ever held in Brazil, showing 350 pieces of art from 11 museums and institutions in seven countries - Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico and Peru. \u003cbr/\u003eA total of 52 cultures are represented in the exhibition, which took eight months to prepare.\u003cbr/\u003eThe oldest items in the exhibition are two zoolith - stones in the shape of animals - which were found in Brazil and date from between 4500 BC and 500 AD. Both items belong to the National Museum of the Rio de Janeiro Federal University. \u003cbr/\u003eAnother important piece in the exhibition is this \"Quipu\", which is from the fifteenth century Inca civilisation and was found in Peru. \u003cbr/\u003eThe colour of the knots, the number of the knots and the distance between them is the codification of a language. \u003cbr/\u003eA very rare tunic, made with cotton and feathers dates between 900 to 1500 AD and belongs to the Ica culture, which was contemporary to the Incans. \u003cbr/\u003eA piece of pottery, called \"Quimbaya\", is from a culture that once thrived in central Colombia. The pottery shows the figure of a chief of the civilisation. \u003cbr/\u003eAnother part of the exhibition shows golden objects from different civilisations. \u003cbr/\u003eA golden nose ring, which was crafted about one-thousand years ago by people from the Tairona culture in Colombia, belongs to the \"Museo del Oro del Banco de la Republica Colombiana\". \u003cbr/\u003eArchaeologist Marcia Arcuri, 34, who has studied pre-Columbian art for the past 10 years, is the curator of the exhibition. \u003cbr/\u003eArcuri says the exhibition is important because it shows Brazil's pre-Columbian past - something that's difficult for modern Brazilians to see. \u003cbr/\u003eMany university students have been visiting the exhibition, including 19-year-old Carlos Arruda, who studies architecture. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says he's interested in seeing what happened in the Americas before the arrival of the Europeans. \u003cbr/\u003eElsewhere in the exhibition, a local theatre group performs a Tupi-Guarani song, used to prepare the tribe for war.\u003cbr/\u003eThe exhibition will remain in Rio until January 29, 2006, before travelling to the Brazilian cities of Brasilia and Sao
