Medium of bar area at rooftop pool\u003cbr/\u003eThe US hotel industry is facing a huge downturn, with the state of California the hardest hit. \u003cbr/\u003e13 hotel loans worth $596 million went behind on payments in June.\u003cbr/\u003eNow one hotel in Los Angeles is hoping to defy the trend by offering added luxuries.\u003cbr/\u003eTourism is the number one industry in Los Angeles, generating around 14 billion dollars with direct spending into the US economy.\u003cbr/\u003eAn average of just over 25 million people visit yearly, but hotels are feeling the economic downturn.\u003cbr/\u003eOccupancy rates were down about 12% -13% for the first 6 months of 2009. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Los Angeles' 63.5% occupancy rate is still higher than the current national average of 54.6%, and the State of California average of 58.9%.\u003cbr/\u003eMany new hotels, built during the boom, have opened, increasing the supply of hotel rooms by 3%.\u003cbr/\u003eIt takes three years for a new hotel to get established and stabilise it's income, a tough mission in these times.\u003cbr/\u003ePatti McJennett, from the Los Angeles Convention and Visitors Bureau, admits these have been tough times for everyone but the tourism industry was particularly affected. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Our industry realises that there is nothing more perishable than a hotel room that's not filled unless it's an airline seat that remains empty. And, you know, it's good for their business, but it also affords customers, guests some real opportunities to have some good deals,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eOne hotel that has lowered its rates to attract guests is the newly opened SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills, A Luxury Collection Hotel. \u003cbr/\u003eThe 297-room hotel has been weathering the storm with a state of the art urban resort approach. \u003cbr/\u003eThe hotel opened in August 2008 in the middle of the recession and despite rooms starting at around $400 every weekend has been almost sold out, with weekdays full at around 60 percent. \u003cbr/\u003ePhilip Daley, general manager at the hotel, says when the recession hit, his company had created an original hotel never seen before. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We had to rewrite the entire book and we write the book everyday. We always kind of positioned ourselves just a little bit lower in rate and price than, lets say, the more traditional five star luxury hotels,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the novelty attractions are the seven \"lifestyle fitness suites.\" \u003cbr/\u003eBuilt-in fitness equipment enables guests to work out in their rooms, without having to go to the gym.\u003cbr/\u003eSpecialised Kinesis trainers are on call to assist the work out.\u003cbr/\u003eDerek Brewster is one of the personal trainers who makes room visits.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says these suites are hugely popular for those who just don't like doing workouts in a gym. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It's great for those guests who don't want to go to the fitness centre.
