Zerrougi emphasised that their role in the country was to \"assist technically\" DRC's government forces, and not replace them, but said that they would be speaking to headquarters in order to get \"a very clear mandate\" for their work in the country.\u003cbr/\u003eShe was speaking to reporters in Goma, a provincial capital on the border with Rwanda.\u003cbr/\u003eYears of sporadic violence in eastern DRC intensified in the last few weeks, and fighting between the army and fighters loyal to rebel leader Laurent Nkunda has displaced at least 250,000 people since then - despite the presence of the largest U.N. peacekeeping force in the world, known by the French acronym MONUC, or United Nations Organisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are fears the country could slide back into a ruinous war such as the 1998-2002 one that drew in more than half a dozen African nations and tore Congo into rival fiefdoms.\u003cbr/\u003eLieutenant Colonel Jean-Paul Dietrich, a spokesman for MONUC said that they had three lines of defence and that they felt \"comfortable\" in Goma.\u003cbr/\u003eEastern DRC has been unstable since millions of refugees spilled across the border from Rwanda's 1994 genocide, which saw more than 500,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus slaughtered.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of the Hutu extremists who orchestrated the mass killings have remained in DRC, prompting Tutsi-led Rwanda to invade the mineral-rich nation twice.\u003cbr/\u003eNkunda, who quit DRC's army in 2004, claims he is fighting to protect Tutsis, who like
