was inaugerated by Brazil's Minister for Culture Gilberto Gil, who acknowledged that literacy rates were poor across much of Latin America.\u003cbr/\u003eBut he said events like this were necessary to help boost Brazil's weak reading habits.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 55 thousand metre square book fair - which will accomodate 916 exhibitors - will showcase over a thousand newly published books by Brazilian and international authors.\u003cbr/\u003eWith more than 100 thousand titles in the stands in all, the book fair attracts publishers, editors and literary agents from all over the world. \u003cbr/\u003eOrganisers are hoping for half a million visitors over ten days.\u003cbr/\u003eThis year the event will pay special homage to Italy, a country that has a strong cultural links with Brazil. \u003cbr/\u003eItaly's exhibition stand is the fair's largest, covering an area of 300 square metres. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are stands dedicated to every litaracy taste, from children's books to books about football.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the highlights of the event is the presence of famous international writers who are in Rio to launch their latest books.\u003cbr/\u003eAmong them, American lawyer Scott Turow, who is launching his latest book called \"Reversible Errors\", in which he discusses the question of the death penalty in the United States. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen he asked about the violence in Rio de Janeiro and the corruption in Brazil's judiciary system, he said both countries share similarities and the way to solve such problems was by giving equal opportunities to all citizens. \u003cbr/\u003eOne of the most anticipated books at the fair is \"Fury\", written by Salman Rushdie. \u003cbr/\u003eThe author arrived in Rio de Janeiro on Friday to launch the book during the event. \u003cbr/\u003eAt a press conference, he spoke about religious intolerance. \u003cbr/\u003eRushdie was sentenced to death by the Iranian Ayatollah Khomeini, after his book \"Satanic Versus\" was published. \u003cbr/\u003eFor Salman Rushdie, religious intolerance is an international phenomenon that brings religion back to the centre of the international political
