The experts will start working on Friday.\u003cbr/\u003eInternational experts began work on Thursday to assess chemicals that weapons inspectors left behind in their laboratories when they evacuated Iraq last year. \u003cbr/\u003eThe multinational team, accompanied by French, Russian and Chinese diplomats, entered the U.N. Special Commission's headquarters at the Canal Hotel, where the chemicals are stored. \u003cbr/\u003eThey were later joined by presidential adviser Lt. Gen. Amer Hammoodi Al-Sa'adi and Gen. Hussam Mohammed Amin, director of Iraq's National Monitoring Committee. \u003cbr/\u003eDuring their four-day mission, the five experts are to assess what needs to be done to dispose of the chemicals and then close a chemical lab and a germ warfare room used by the inspectors. \u003cbr/\u003eFour of the experts are from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, an independent group based in The Hague, Netherlands, which was set up in 1997 to destroy deadly chemical agents throughout the world. \u003cbr/\u003eThe fifth team member is an independent biological weapons expert. \u003cbr/\u003eShah said they were fully briefed by UNSCOM experts in Bahrain on the nature of toxic materials in the building before heading to Iraq.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Canal Hotel also houses U.N. relief agencies and staff supervising the implementation of the oil-for-food programme.  \u003cbr/\u003eU.N. envoy Prakash Shah assured the 150 U.N. staff there that they have nothing to worry about as the experts destroy the chemicals and mustard gas.\u003cbr/\u003eThe commission, or UNSCOM, overseeing the scrapping of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction, occupies the third floor of the hotel.  The U.N. weapons inspectors pulled out in December just before the United States and Britain launched airstrikes against Iraq for the country's alleged failure to cooperate with the inspectors. \u003cbr/\u003eIraq has vowed not to let the commission back into the country.
