Hundreds of finished sculptures outside workshop\u003cbr/\u003eFor decades Alejandro Santiago's picturesque hometown in southern Mexico has said goodbye to its youth, who have left to seek work in the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eNow the Oaxacan artist is trying to repopulate his childhood town of Teococuilco, at least metaphorically.\u003cbr/\u003eSantiago has created 1,500 clay sculptures of migrants. The life like figures stand 1.3 metres (4.27 feet) tall on average and weigh about 70 kilogrammes (154 pounds), but no two are exactly the same.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of their faces reflect the hardships of their lives, both in Mexico and in the United States.\u003cbr/\u003e\"These are not pretty sculptures, these are sculptures that carry pain on their hearts or that carry certain anguish, certain emotions,\" assured Santiago.\u003cbr/\u003eThe artist said the idea occurred to him six years ago when he returned to his hometown after spending more than a decade travelling and was hit by how vacant Teococuilco's streets were.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I didn't know how many,\" said the artist about embarking on this project, \"but I knew I had to re-populate an entire town so I could feel the same way I did back when I was a kid playing with marbles and spinning tops.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2003, Santiago decided he needed to experience for himself what it's like to cross the U.S. border illegally. So he bought a bus ticket to Tijuana, met a smuggler who set him up with fake papers and tried to cross.\u003cbr/\u003eOn his way, he passed thousands of crucifixes on the corrugated wall marking the border in Tijuana. The crosses, placed there by activists, represent those who have died trying to cross.\u003cbr/\u003eThe nervous artist was quickly detected by U.S. immigration authorities and was returned to Mexico, but the image of the crucifixes stayed in his mind.\u003cbr/\u003eSantiago figured he had seen about 2,500 crosses, the number he decided to pick for his project. He added one more to symbolise that there is always one more person who is leaving, risking his or her life to reach the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eSantiago has received a 100,000 dollar grant from The Rockefeller Foundation to complete his project of 2,501 figures and has hired a crew of 35 workers from Oaxaca state.\u003cbr/\u003eHe plans to take his clay figures on the road. He would like them to follow the routes of migrants by appearing at galleries and museums in parts of northern Mexico and the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eThen he wants to return the figures to their
