Speaking particularly about the Great Barrier Reef, the UN found only a month or so ago that the Barrier Reef was the world benchmark in terms of the management of coral systems.  It is the best managed coral reef in the world.  It is the most resilient.  All of our policies over many years have been focussed on ensuring that the reef is healthy and that it is resilient and that it is able to deal with and adapt to the consequences of climate change. This initiative, even if it were only capable of reducing that rate of deforestation by 50 per cent, if that is all we were able to do - and our ambitions are much greater than that - we would reduce the rate of greenhouse gas emissions by more than ten times that which has been achieved by the Kyoto protocol.\"    \u003cbr/\u003e9. Dobriansky, Turnbull and Connaughton walking away\u003cbr/\u003eA United Nations climate report issued on Friday - which found that the poorest parts of the world will be hit hardest by global warming - has been described as \"an important next step\" by a Senior White House official.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe President's principal adviser on environmental matters, James Connaughton, said the report was important for policy making.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter meeting with the Australian Minister for the Environment and Water Resources in Washington, DC, Connaughton said the report by the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change - issued after a long, contentious editing session - \"helps us understand new areas of research, especially the regional impacts both negative and positive of climate change.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe new authoritative scientific report says that when the Earth gets a few degrees hotter, inconvenience will give way to danger, death and extinction of species.\u003cbr/\u003eEven though some of the scientists' prose was toned down or lost, the panel's report was gloomy - with a bit of hope at the end.\u003cbr/\u003eThe United States, China and Saudi Arabia raised the most objections to the phrasing, most often seeking to tone the certainty of some of the more dire projections.\u003cbr/\u003eThe final report is the clearest and most comprehensive scientific statement to date on the impact of global warming mainly caused by man-induced carbon dioxide pollution.\u003cbr/\u003eIt predicts that up to 30 percent of species face an increased risk of extinction if global temperatures rise 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius) above the average in the 1980s and 90s.\u003cbr/\u003eBut even Connaughton, the head of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, noted that \"the groundswell of science is creating a groundswell of new opportunities for sensible policy and that is what we have got today.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe Australian Environment Minister, Malcolm Turnbull said his country's scientists were very involved in the scientific process leading to the release of the report.\u003cbr/\u003eHe also acknowledged the Australian government had serious concerns about the predicted impact on fragile ecosystems - such as Kakadu National Park and The Great Barrier Reef - but said that current government policy had
