A small terrace of ten square meters covered with metal roof, is the current home of eighteen raptors who...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003e A laughing falcon calls out...\u003cbr/\u003eThis beautiful bird lives on the second floor of a modest house in the city of Apopa in El Salvador. \u003cbr/\u003eA small terrace of ten square meters covered with metal roof, is the current home of eighteen raptors who were rescued by Orland Jimenez and his team of volunteers. \u003cbr/\u003eThe hawks and falcons were once in captivity or injured by hunters. \u003cbr/\u003eThe team gave them medical treatment and rehabilitates them until they are ready to return to the wild, which can take up to two years, depending on the injuries or trauma they sustained. \u003cbr/\u003eOrlando Jimenez, founded the NGO ALAS (WINGS) Foundation seven years ago as a young biology student. \u003cbr/\u003e\" With time the space for raptors will gradually decrease, then why we have joined with other institutions working in parks and other conservation groups, we are working in the area of birds and many of the birds that we are looking after here are threatened by changes to their habitat\" he explains.\u003cbr/\u003eWith the help of private donations the small team spend about 50 dollars a month for care of each bird, and often they have 15 birds at same time.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Most are common birds, we work with birds occasionally which are threatened or in danger of extinction, not only in El Salvador but also in the region. But but each year we can treat up to 30 to 40 birds  approximately, but with some birds that we supported as well, in terms of raptors it could be about 50 per year.\" Jiminez adds. \u003cbr/\u003eJiminez and his small team have helped over 350 raptors since the group was established seven years ago. \u003cbr/\u003eTasks include cleaning cages and administering medicine.\u003cbr/\u003eVolunteer Luis Rivas says that he feels their work is important. \u003cbr/\u003e \"One is making a change, one is contributing to the birds and the fauna of the country. It is true that many people do not know that they exist and that in fact they are dying out, many of the specimens that we have here are ending. When you do this work it contributes to the country for the future of nature. \"\u003cbr/\u003eAmir Ala bi says volunteering makes him proud.  \u003cbr/\u003e \" I feel very good and proud of what we do here, maybe not enough, but I feel good to see when the birds are released, or see one and you say: That's the one we were rehabilitated  in ALAS (wings)\"\u003cbr/\u003eAn important part of the raptors rehabilitation is to help them regain their muscle strength so they can one day be released into their native habitat. \u003cbr/\u003eThat means regularly flying training at a local soccer pitch. \u003cbr/\u003e \"The limiting move in the cages where they stayed before, they now do not have enough muscle mass to fly,  then what we do here is basically that they start exercising, to trust on their flight \" Jimenez explains. \u003cbr/\u003eAbout twice times a year the team releases birds in protected areas.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording the government figures there are 53 bird of prey (raptor) species in El Salvador and they are protected species here, but illegal hunting is commonplace, although no government figures are available for the number of birds killed or injured by hunters. \u003cbr/\u003eApopa, El Salvador - August 25, 2013 \u003cbr/\u003e1.
