What I specifically love about the dances of the Middle East, Turkey, Egypt, Lebanon, Iranďż˝ I get to learn dance steps, but I also get to learn about a different culture.\"\u003cbr/\u003eOriental Istanbul is one of the local tour operators that offer traveling combined with culture and belly dance lessons.\u003cbr/\u003eThe company started operating in 2011, when their founders realised there was an increasing demand abroad for Turkish culture and dances. \u003cbr/\u003eOriental Istanbul offers different cultural trips around the year, including activities like Turkish cuisine, Oriental, Dervish and Romany dance.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the tour, the customers take lessons, enjoy the local cuisine and spirits and visit the most important monuments in town.\u003cbr/\u003eThe groups are small, not exceeding 70 people, and many of them are Japanese, according to company staff. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Usually we have clients from all around the world, including a lot of people from Asia, specially Japan. There is a big demand from Japan for Turkish belly dance\", explains Burcu Kisakurek, one of the founding partners at Oriental Istanbul.\u003cbr/\u003eThe customers usually travel first to Istanbul, where they enjoy some lessons and sightseeing activities, and afterwards to their final destination, in this case Edirne, where the Summer Roma festival is being held.\u003cbr/\u003eThe tour fees range from 750 to 850 Euros ($1000 approx) for a 6 day tour, according to their staff, including lessons, accommodation and transportation.\u003cbr/\u003eFigures by the Turkish Statistical Institute show that in 2013 about 35 million foreigners visited Turkey, including almost 200,000 from East Asian countries, 87 per cent of them Japanese.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen the travellers finally join the Roma crowd in Edirne, the locals are amazed by their dancing skills. \u003cbr/\u003eMany Roma people want to take pictures with them and are curious about their knowledge of the Turkish culture.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the Oriental Istanbul founding partners is Yoko Gemba, from Japan.\u003cbr/\u003eShe moved to Istanbul in 2007 where she began learning Oriental dances.\u003cbr/\u003eGemba  also designs her own dancing outfits, inspired by the Romany culture, and she exports them to Japan.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We started a project called Oriental Istanbul, which is offering the people to come somewhere like Edirne or Cappadocia, so that people can see the place and also have a chance to learn dance\", explains Gemba.\u003cbr/\u003eThe experience is enlightening for the customers, many of them professional or amateur dancers, as they learn the difference between Oriental and Romany dance.\u003cbr/\u003eAkiko Tanikawa, a dancer came to the same tour three years ago and she wanted to repeat the experience.\u003cbr/\u003eShe began learning belly dance in Los Angeles in 2007. \u003cbr/\u003e\"To me Roma dance and belly dance, oriental dance, are totally different things\", she says. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Roma dance is more like a folk-like dance, because it is made by the people in this region of Turkey. There are so many differences: musical differences, movement is totally different. So today I learnt a lot about these differences.\"\u003cbr/\u003eOzgen, the choreographer and teacher based in UK, says that foreigners and specially the Japanese students are very enthusiastic and want to attain perfection in their dancing. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It is amazing that they (the foreign students) embrace this dance and they love it. I don't know, I think it is something about the 9/8 rhythm\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe 9/8 rhythm is the characteristic time signature for Romany music. \u003cbr/\u003eFor the Roma people here, there is no musical theory. They have been learning the rhythm and the music since childhood and perform it in an improvised way.\u003cbr/\u003eThe local musicians feel proud that their culture is attracting more and more foreigners and enjoy mixing and dancing with them.\u003cbr/\u003eMumin Yuksel, a Turkish Romany musician, says he is used to seeing many foreigners, like Japanese and Americans, coming to the festival, and what they learn is to let go of their emotions.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The people who come here are not actually getting trained.
