in the rebel groups that fought former leader Moammar Gadhafi in the country's eight-month civil war, but their numbers have mushroomed in the two years since his fall.\u003cbr/\u003eFor months after Gadhafi's ousting, militias protected Tripoli's international airport, provided border security and ensured the country did not spiral out of control.\u003cbr/\u003eThe state continues to pay many militias, relying on them to serve as security forces since the police and military remain heavily disorganised. \u003cbr/\u003eThey carry out assigned security duties such as guarding important buildings, forming security belts around cities, or patrolling neighbourhoods.\u003cbr/\u003eBut their continued existence has fuelled resentment, and some militias have been accused of rights abuses.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother accusation levelled at them is they often act as renegades with their own agenda.\u003cbr/\u003eResidents say they run their own prisons, enforce their own rule over neighbourhoods or towns, engage in kidnappings and extortion and spark battles with rival militias.\u003cbr/\u003eSome have hardline Islamic ideologies and have become notorious for imposing Islamic law restrictions.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Sunday, dozens of protesters gathered in Tripoli's Algeria Square to protest against their continued existence.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The protest today is that we do not
