jobs.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We have established a base from which to develop the reprocessing of fuel used in our country, guaranteeing a much better environment and social health,\" President Alan Garcia said at the official opening of the plant, just outside the capital, Lima.\u003cbr/\u003eThe plant was constructed by Peru's Herco Combustibles, using local materials and labour and an initial investment of 25 (m) million dollars.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We will generate wealth and jobs using land that has been abandoned for a long time and that has become desert where no other crop aside from jathropa can be realistically be planted,\" said Samir Abudayeh, the general manager of Heaven Petroleum which owns Herco Combustibles.\u003cbr/\u003eHe added that the company anticipated extending the cultivation of 50-thousand hectares in the country to set them aside for the production of fuel, with an investment of 200 (m) million dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eAbudayeh stressed that the biofuel crops would not replace crops used for human consumption and urged the government to promote the use of deforested land to drive the biofuel industry forward. \u003cbr/\u003eBiofuels, which are made from agricultural products, have been seen by many as a cleaner and cheaper way to meet the world's soaring energy needs than with greenhouse-gas emitting fossil fuels. \u003cbr/\u003eBrazil currently
