Israel and a Palestinian state - living alongside one another in peace - adding that a lasting peace was in the interest not only of the Palestinians and Israelis but of the world. \u003cbr/\u003eBush's travels through the Mideast does not include a stop in Gaza, which is controlled by the militant group Hamas, which the US considers a 'terrorist' group. \u003cbr/\u003eHamas has been controlling the Gaza Strip since taking over in June 2007 - while Abbas' government has control of the West Bank.  \u003cbr/\u003eBush said Hamas has \"delivered nothing but misery\" to Palestinians living in Gaza, adding that he doesn't know whether the West Bank-led government of Abbas can resolve the Palestinian division this year.\u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking at a joint news conference with the US president on Wednesday in Jerusalem, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told reporters that security in Gaza was a vital part of peace negotiations.  \u003cbr/\u003eBush also said he understands Palestinian frustrations over checkpoints throughout the West Bank but added that they are necessary for now to give Israelis a sense of security.\u003cbr/\u003eBush's challenge is to convince sceptical governments that, with just a year remaining in his presidency and Americans deep in the process of selecting his successor, he is willing to devote the time and effort necessary to bridge decades of differences in this troubled region.\u003cbr/\u003eExpectations of success are low, and no one was predicting big breakthroughs as Bush visits Israel, the Palestinian-governed West
