News conference\u003cbr/\u003eThe UN Secretary General Ban ki Moon, on an African tour trying to solve the crisis between Sudan and its rebels in Darfur, won backing on Friday from the president of Sudan's neighbour Chad.\u003cbr/\u003ePresident Idriss Deby, speaking to reporters after his talks with  Ban said he had discussed hosting a preliminary meeting for Darfur rebels before the peace conference set to start on 27 October, 2007, in Libya.\u003cbr/\u003e\"If Chad can make a contribution, I am convinced it can happen. before we begin a formal meeting,\" said Ban.\u003cbr/\u003eMore than 200-thousand people have died, with 2.5 (m) million homeless, since ethnic African rebels in Darfur took up arms against the Arab-dominated Sudanese government in 2003, accusing it of decades of neglect. \u003cbr/\u003eSudan's government is accused of retaliating by unleashing a militia of Arab nomads known as the janjaweed, a charge it denies.\u003cbr/\u003eThe fighting has sent tens of thousands of refugees into Chad and the neighbouring Central African\u003cbr/\u003eRepublic. Raiders from Sudan have attacked refugees and Chadian villagers in Chad, offering cover for Chad's own rebels against the rule of President Deby.\u003cbr/\u003ePrevious attempts at thrashing out agreement have faltered because of disagreement amongst the rebel factions and the Ban-Deby plan for pre-conference talks could prevent a recurrence.\u003cbr/\u003eAny agreement is likely to involve troops from France and Belgium, with backing from Britain and Sweden and further assistance from the African Union.\u003cbr/\u003eDeby rejected an initial proposal for a 10,900-member U.N. force to patrol the Darfur-Chad border and help protect about 238,000 Sudanese refugees in a dozen camps in eastern Chad and increasing numbers of uprooted Chadians.\u003cbr/\u003eBan's Chad stop follows four days in Sudan, including a visit to a camp for displaced people in Darfur.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Saturday he goes to Libya, a visit that takes on added importance with the announcement that Libya will host Darfur peace talks.\u003cbr/\u003eBan took time off during his visit to see the effect of desertification on Lake Chad, some 45 minutes by helicopter from the capital, where he was greeted by local
