North Atlantic Ocean.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough easily accessible by plane from Britain or Scandinavia, the Faeroe Islands are remote enough to be off-limits to mass tourism. \u003cbr/\u003eFrom the air you get a full appreciation of how lonely these 18 islands are. \u003cbr/\u003eTiny villages with colourful wooden houses are clustered around the shores, but the inside of the islands is desolate. \u003cbr/\u003eThe mountainsides are simply too steep or too exposed to the elements to make comfortable living possible.\u003cbr/\u003eYou also get an idea of why the Faeroese don't pay much board, 2006), the Faeroese live in harmony with each other and nature. \u003cbr/\u003eNature has carved a dramatic landscape from the basalt rock spewed out by volcanic eruptions millions of years ago. \u003cbr/\u003eEvery winding turn of the well-kept roads offer majestic views over deep-green pastures, shimmering fjords or steep cliffs towering over the Atlantic swell.\u003cbr/\u003eEighteen islands make up the Faeroes and although many of the main islands are connected by roads and bridges many only remain accessible by helicopter or boat.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of the islands are inhabited, and the locals rely heavily on daily helicopter services to supply essential items. \u003cbr/\u003eThe dramatic landscape is home to some of the Faeroe Islands' highest mountains, a number of which tower 2,500 feet above sea level.\u003cbr/\u003eMany historians believe the first human settlers were Irish monks in the 6th century.\u003cbr/\u003eWhilst sailing past the islands, the monks named the Faeroes 'The islands of sheep'.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 1849 Danish legislation incorporated the Faeroes into Denmark.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Islands are self governing but remain under Danish administration.\u003cbr/\u003eBritish troops occupied the islands during World War Two to prevent the Germans from landing.\u003cbr/\u003eHarsh as it may seem, the climate is actually very mild for this northern latitude thanks to the Gulf Stream, a warm ocean current that helps keep average temperatures between 3 C (37 F) in the winter and 11 C (52 F) in summer.\u003cbr/\u003eThe mix of warm Gulf Stream waters and frigid Arctic waters also provides for fertile breeding ground for fish, whose impact on the Faeroe Islands cannot be overestimated.\u003cbr/\u003eFishing remains the primary industry in Torshavn, the bustling Faeroese capital. \u003cbr/\u003eThe local government says fish products account for an estimated 97 percent of export volumes, and you believe it when you see the impressive fleet of trawlers crowding the port in Torshavn. \u003cbr/\u003eFaeroese cod, saithe, haddock and farmed salmon are shipped around the world.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Danish government provide the Faroese with subsidises to help preserve their strong culture and fishing industry.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Faroese tourist season begins in May and ends by September. \u003cbr/\u003eMost visitors come between July and August to enjoy the green landscape and nature. \u003cbr/\u003eElin Heinesen head of Faeroe islands tourism board says many visitors are amazed by the unique landscape, fresh air and the high mountains.\u003cbr/\u003ePuffins, kittiwakes, gannets and the world's biggest colony of storm petrels make the Faeroes a top destination for ornithologists.\u003cbr/\u003eRegular musical cave trips leave from Torshavn harbour.\u003cbr/\u003eChristian Black Faroese Musician and composer says he is lucky to have such great caves to use as concert halls.\u003cbr/\u003eAt Slave's Edge on the island of Vagar, a high-lying lake spills over a rock wall and releases its excess water into the ocean in a 30-metre waterfall.\u003cbr/\u003eTour guide and local farmer Oliver Polsen says the lake and waterfall is a popular excursion with tourists because of its dramatic rocks, waves and nature.\u003cbr/\u003ePolish tourist Eva Osiatynska says the lake boat and waterfall trip was very exciting.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough whale hunting remains a controversial issue around the world, whale meat is a popular part of the traditional diet here. \u003cbr/\u003ePractised since the tenth century whale hunts are regulated by the Faeroese authorities and approved by the Intentional Whaling commission.\u003cbr/\u003eMany visitors can taste traditional Faeroese food at tasting sessions across the island.\u003cbr/\u003eTraditional Faeroese cook, Helga, says traditional foods include dried whale meat, whale blubber, dried fish and dried lamb.\u003cbr/\u003eOddly for a fishing nation, fresh seafood does not dominate the menus at Torshavn's eateries. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Faeroese like to eat meat when they go out, not fish which is considered a staple food.\u003cbr/\u003eYou'll need some courage to sample Faeroese delicacies like sheep's head, whale blubber and Skerpikjoet (raw mutton that has been left to dry for months.\u003cbr/\u003eIf you're not feeling adventurous, there's
