Low angle of snails stuck on a long fence at an outdoor snail farm \u003cbr/\u003eAn organic snail farming business in Greece is pulling in healthy profits for its young entrepreneurs.  \u003cbr/\u003eIt comes at a time when many small and medium sized Greek business are filing for bankruptcy.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2007, with Greece on the brink of a prolonged recession, Panayota and Maria Vlachou decided to return from studies abroad in order to kick-start a snail farming company in Corinth, an industrial city close to the Athenian capital. \u003cbr/\u003eUntil the business idea was hatched, entrepreneurship had never figured among the sisters' plans.\u003cbr/\u003eEquipped with language degrees from several European Universities they had envisioned careers in academia and international organisations. \u003cbr/\u003eBut an idea conceived over the phone while one sister was dining on a plate of snails in a Swiss restaurant, led to a completely different life and career path for the two young women.\u003cbr/\u003eMaria Vlachou, CEO and co-founder of Fereikos-Helix Company says: \"My sister called me and she asked what I was doing.  And when I told her I was eating snails, she laughed. Then when I told her that these snails were costing around 37 euros per portion, she stopped to laugh of course and she told me well then since it was raining in Corinth-where she was living at that time - maybe I can pick up some snails from the garden and we can sell them to the Swiss and not only.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe Vlachou sisters started the \"Fereikos Helix\" company in 2007 aiming to create a profitable, export-based company that would cater to the global demand for snails from restaurateurs and delicatessens. \u003cbr/\u003eVlachou says: \"My first thought was, I cannot deal with something that doesn't speak and doesn't listen. Then, afterwards, even though I forgot it for some weeks, we realised that the market was huge and that maybe we should go for it. And that was also a chance for me to come back to Greece and start something on my own.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe name \"Fereikos\" originates from an ancient Greek word meaning \"to carry one's home.\" \u003cbr/\u003eAs Vlachou explains, the name not only applies to snail anatomy, but to the nature of her company. \"Fereikos-Helix\" is family owned, and and one of the thousands of small and medium sized companies that make up the back-bone of the Greek economy. \u003cbr/\u003eThirty-two year old Vlachou admits to struggling with a lot of red tape in Greece, but says working in the primary sector isn't easy anywhere and hopes to benefit from EU funds in the future. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the moment, Greece lacks the necessary infrastructure for product packaging, so the company's branded products are first produced in Greece and sent to Italy for packaging before they travel to clients in Spain, France, Italy, Poland and Slovenia.  The company is going to try its hand in product packaging in the coming months. \u003cbr/\u003eVlachou says: \"Till now, I mean till last year, we were exporting 70 percent of our production. Since Greece became a very difficult market now because many restaurants are closing and some others don't have the money to pay you and since we are working so well with the customers abroad, we are trying to increase this number and this year we are expecting to export 80 percent of our production and products.\" \u003cbr/\u003eIn addition to new clients in Turkey, the sisters hope to expand the business significantly with clients beyond the European continent. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Vlachou company has won won several excellence awards including the 2011 distinction for best young entrepreneur awarded by Easy Jet founder Stelios Hatziioannou. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Vlachou says she is most proud of her ability to create jobs for other families in Greece through the Fereikos-Helix business model; The Corinth-based company sells snail eggs and organic seeds to a network of 162  families whose farms reach all the way from Evros on Greece's Northern border to Crete in the South. \u003cbr/\u003eThe families then have a choice of whether to sell the grown snails back to the Vlachou family, with most of them opting to do so, according to Maria Vlachou, whose company has become the official Greek partner of the International Snail Institute based in Italy. \u003cbr/\u003eIn a sinking jobs market with the highest youth unemployment rate in Europe, this farming company is creating jobs and income for dozens of Greeks.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the young farmers who has profited from the mentorship of  Maria Vlachou is 30-year-old Christos Mouscos. \u003cbr/\u003eMouscos quit his job in information technology at an Athens based firm in search of a better life in the Greek countryside. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"The biggest obstacle for me, I think, was my own self. It was clearly a mentality issue. Because when all you hear all day on TV is that we are defaulting, we're about to exit the euro, or seeing your family and salaries being cut, you are impacted as a human being.
