We saw damage 360 degrees around the upper portion of the external tank and the foam that's applied up in those areas. Wide of NASA officials at media conference \u003cbr/\u003eNASA officials on Tuesday postponed next month's launch of space shuttle Atlantis after a hail storm left hundreds of small dents on the space craft's external fuel tank and on a wing. \u003cbr/\u003eThe decision was announced at a media conference at the Kennedy Space Centre at Cape Canaveral, Florida.\u003cbr/\u003eThe launch, which had been set for March 15, was pushed back to at least late April to give NASA time to make repairs. \u003cbr/\u003eWayne Hale, Manager of the Space Shuttle Program said technicians inspected the shuttle on Tuesday morning and reported there had been considerable damage from the hail storm to the external tanks.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We saw damage 360 degrees around the upper portion of the external tank and the foam that's applied up in those areas. liquid oxygen propellant. \u003cbr/\u003eDuring their 11 days in space, Atlantis' astronauts must deliver a 35,000-pound (15,875-kilogram) addition to the international space station, the heaviest ever, along with a new pair of solar arrays. \u003cbr/\u003eCrew members are also supposed to unfurl the solar arrays, fold up an old pair and conduct at least three space walks.\u003cbr/\u003eHale said there would be a long launch window in April and May when Atlantis returns to the launch pad. \u003cbr/\u003eMonday evening's thunderstorms moved quickly and had winds of up to 60 miles per hour (96 kilometres per hour). \u003cbr/\u003eThe size of the hail was between a half inch and two inches (1.25 centimetres and 5 centimetres) and landed only at the NASA space centre. \u003cbr/\u003eIt
