(group of women) \u003cbr/\u003eElderly women have become the latest victims of rape in Nairobi's slums.\u003cbr/\u003eAlmost 20% of victims of reported sexual assaults in the capital last year were over sixty, according to Nairobi Women's Hospital. \u003cbr/\u003eBut now a group of grandmothers is fighting back. \u003cbr/\u003eKorogocho slum, on the outskirts of Nairobi, is home to over 100,000 Kenyans, crammed into just one square kilometre. \u003cbr/\u003eHere, poverty and crime go hand in hand. \u003cbr/\u003eMost residents earn less then one dollar a day and struggle to make ends meet. \u003cbr/\u003eProstitution, unemployment, domestic violence and drug addiction are some of the daily perils of life here.\u003cbr/\u003eUnfortunately, rape is a common occurrence in the Nairobi slums, and elderly women are becoming the latest victims.\u003cbr/\u003eLillian Kasina is a Programme and Monitoring Officer at the Gender Recovery Centre, which is privately owned by the Nairobi Women's Hospital. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says that attacks on the over 60s are increasing. \"Last year we saw a total of 2305 cases of sexual violence. Then out of the total cases reported the statistics show that about 18% to 19% of the survivors are above 60 years old.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIn the alleyways of the Korogocho slum, fifty women, many of them grandmothers, have enrolled in twice-a-week self-defence classes at a run-down community centre. \u003cbr/\u003eThe women say they must rely on themselves because the police rarely patrol the streets. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen suspected rapists are reported to the police, they often bribe their way to freedom, the women say.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the Korogocho community hall elderly women pound punch bags with the heels of their bare feet.\u003cbr/\u003eSheila Kariuki, the martial arts instructor demonstrates various self defence techniques. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says that expressing your anger at your attacker is important. \u003cbr/\u003e\"When you yell, you tell the world that you don't like what the rapist is doing to you, or rather what the predator is trying to do to you. well.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMany of the elderly women of Korogocho have been left to take care of their grandchildren whose parents died after contracting AIDS. \u003cbr/\u003eFifty six year old Elizabeth Olwenya became mother in all but name to her five grandchildren, when her daughter died from the disease. \u003cbr/\u003eThe family live in a tiny building which Elizabeth describes as a 'prison cell'\u003cbr/\u003e\"I had no choice but to live with five grandchildren because their mother who was my daughter died of HIV/AIDS, so I have to live with them in my small three roomed house which we can barely fit in, so we just sleep like we are in a prison cell.\"\u003cbr/\u003eElizabeth is passing the knowledge and skills that she has acquired at the classes to her only surviving daughter and grandchildren, empowering future generations. \u003cbr/\u003ePolice crime statistics, which are yet to be updated, show that in 2008 only 841 incidents of rape were reported in the whole country. \u003cbr/\u003eA national police spokesman told the Associated Press that reports of rape in general rose in 2008 and 2009, although he would not release statistics. \u003cbr/\u003eHe said the increase is because of more awareness of the crime and the introduction of stronger laws against sexual offenders.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever an official from Gender Recovery Centre at the privately owned Nairobi Women's Hospital, which offers specialised treatment for sexual abuse victims, says they treated 2,500 rape victims from the capital city alone in 2008. \u003cbr/\u003eNational crime
