I strongly believe, in  fact, that money is much stronger than missiles. So once the elections are out of the  way then we will see considerably less posturing. So I tend - I can not possibly ignore it  because that effects the market - but I don't think really that this is really in fact what is  affecting the market right now.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPERCAPTION: Andrew Freris, Chief Regional Economist, Salomon Brothers\u003cbr/\u003eIn Taiwan, the stock exchange has already been operating at such a low level that  events in the U-S, Hong Kong or even at home can hardly drag it lower.\u003cbr/\u003eBut dips in the U-S and Hong Kong markets shouldn't affect most other Asian markets,  as their interest rate cycles are quite different.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd only Hong Kong and Thailand tie their currency closely to the U-S dollar, making  them most vulnerable to shifts across the Pacific.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Japan, stock prices fell nearly two per cent on fears of Wall Street instability and the  domestic budget deadlock. \u003cbr/\u003eThe dollar again slipped in value against the Yen, closing at 105.34. Japan's persistent  trade surplus was blamed as a major factor.\u003cbr/\u003eAll this means a drop in Japanese interest rates is unlikely as the Nikkei index tends to  operate independently of most other markets.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"In Japan, interest rates have fallen for so long to so low, that it is natural in fact that  you expect the next move is likely to be up further than down.
