Sulphur dioxide and nitrogen  dioxide is causing the Taj to crack and crumble.\u003cbr/\u003eBut today in Agra USAID launched an initiative which they hope will begin to reverse the  environmental causes of the Taj Mahal's disease.\u003cbr/\u003e\"By exposing these industrialists to state-of-the-art technology first of all they will know  that there are technologies available that will help them both meet the requirements  they have for limiting their pollution and for better use of the materials that they put into  the whole process.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: David Hess, US AID\u003cbr/\u003eRahman is the owner of one of Agra's oldest foundries, founded by his grandfather in  1904. The foundries have born the brunt of the blame for  Agra's pollution, but Rahman  says that will now change:\u003cbr/\u003e\"US AID will identify the share of the foundries in air pollution and then find out the  possible solutions and then to identify the sources where the technology may be  available in The States.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Rahman, Chairman Agra Iron Foundries Association\u003cbr/\u003eAgra's Iron foundries began during the Mughal Empire. Over 60,000 of the town's  population is directly employed by the foundries. \u003cbr/\u003eUSAID will work with the Agra Iron Foundry Association to provide foundry owners  modern pollution prevention technology.\u003cbr/\u003eBut this is not charity. It is a project designed to use American expertise to show very  traditional businesses how to increase their profit.  USAID hopes this initiative will be an  example to industrialists in India that protecting the environment and saving money can  go hand in hand.\u003cbr/\u003eJeff Hallett works for Sanders International in Washington which will be working on the  Taj Mahal project:\u003cbr/\u003e\"The problem is Taj Mahal is in a city, and the city is called Agra, and Agra is a very  ancient city with a lot of problems, it has a population of over a million now and the  roads and infrastructure are probably meant to support a population of two-hundred to  three-hundred thousand, added to that it has about two-hundred and thirty or forty  foundries, these are factories, that melt metal, make metal products.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Jeff Halett, Project Manager of Sanders\u003cbr/\u003eBut Agra's Iron foundries argue they are not the main cause of Agra's pollution. In fact,  they say, they only contribute two percent of the chemicals will harm the Taj Mahal.  They blame the traffic congestion in the city.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are four main highways which pass within kilometers of the monument - the main  roads between India's capital Delhi and the country's South Eastern cities.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the Iron Foundries Association also points the finger of blame at the Mathura oil  refinery - located just 50 kilometres away from the Taj Mahal.\u003cbr/\u003eEnvironmentalists say without moving the foundries out of Agra altogether, and without  tackling Agra's other pollutants, the US AID initiative simply does not go far enough:\u003cbr/\u003e\"It is not only the foundries that are the main source of pollution, there are other  industries also.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: M.C.
