Wide shot of Rome's skyline at sunset
Tourists going to Italy this summer can enjoy a real Roman holiday without digging too deeply in their wallets.
The Eternal city offers museum discounts and cheap delicacies to those who know where to look.
Rome is known as 'The Eternal City'.
For thousands of years pilgrims and other visitors have flocked to the Italian capital to marvel at its ancient Roman ruins and churches and cathedrals.
The Eternal City remains an essential destination for overseas tourists despite the global economic slowdown.
At one Tourist Information Point (TIP) in the centre of Rome, supervisor Riccardo Capone says that Rome has long tried to favour tourists on a tight budget.
At the fifteen TIPs spread throughout the centre near monuments, train stations and airports, maps of Rome are available for free.
According to Capone, the city offers many free treats .... the dozens of churches scattered across the city for example.
The great cathedral at the centre of the Vatican, St. Peter's Basilica, opens its gates to millions of tourists every year at no cost.
The world famous Sistine Chapel is accessible through the Vatican Museums for 14 ($22 US), but if you buy a ticket online the price goes up to 26.50 ($41.72 US).
In the summer, long queues to museums tempt tourists to buy cool soft drinks and water at nearby bars and stands.
In front of St. Angel's Castle, Calin a tourist from Holland says buying food and drinks near the monuments has been the most expensive part of her holiday.
But tourists walking under Rome's scorching sun can refresh themselves at the city's hundreds of public water fountains, the free alternative to the bottled water available in bars, cafes, restaurants and sandwich-stands.
To try authentic Roman food, visitors are advised to leave the main roads where waiters are paid to persuade passers-bys to go into their restaurants.
Fernanda d'Arienzo, author of "Roma nel Piatto - Eat as the Romans do" says that meals available in restaurants around the monuments aren't outstanding or convenient.
She says that only experience, a restaurant's reputation, or a reliable guide can direct the more discerning tourists to places where they can taste Rome's authentic flavours.
D'Arienzo says one restaurant not to be missed is Gino's, a classic Roman trattoria where you can still eat the so-called "Fifth-Fourth" cuisine", that's Roman cuisine made out of cheaper ingredients such as an animal's guts, organs, tongue, head and tail.
In a narrow alley behind the Italian Parliament, Gino's has served lunch and dinner to important politicians, businessmen and tourists since 1963.
Gino himself admits his restaurant is hard to find, but well worth the search.
A lunch here costs about 25 ($39 US).
A good way for tourists to cut down on travelling costs is to buy a "Roma Pass" which costs 20 ($31 US) and gives visitors unlimited access to
public transport for three days, as well as giving discounts for tickets to over forty of Rome's museums.
Riccardo Capone says the Roma Pass is very successful because it gives visitors greater freedom.
It allows them to choose two museums to visit for at no extra cost and lets them avoid queues at the most important locations like the Coliseum and the Capitol Museums.
Although travelling to Europe is more expensive because of soaring fuel prices, the Eternal City remains a top attraction for visitors from around the world.
The Roman Forum, the Coliseum and the piazzas with their trattorias and gelato stands still persuade tourists to spend and as the crowds around the Trevi Fountain prove, throwing one's spare change into the Trevi Fountain is not yet considered a waste of money.
Keyword
