And it talks about them not sacrificing their birthright of freemen, which he here underlines.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Felix Pryor, Manuscript Consultant, Phillips Auctioneers\u003cbr/\u003eThe chance discovery of the leaf happened as Simon Roberts - a book valuer at Phillip Auctioneers - carried out a routine valuation of the contents of the Suffolk house.\u003cbr/\u003eHe noticed a corner of an album sticking out from under a sofa.\u003cbr/\u003eAs he removed it from its silk covering, he discovered a vast sheaf of documents - including the rare Washington paper.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I had been shown in by someone who I believe to be the gardener of the house and came to the last room and I was just about to finish up and go and he pointed to this album sticking out from behind the sofa.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Simon Roberts, Book valuer, Phillips Auctioneers\u003cbr/\u003eOnce the missing leaf was found the question arose: is it genuine? \u003cbr/\u003eResearch began to authenticate the document.\u003cbr/\u003eUS manuscript historians discovered that after George Washington's death, parts of the original draft were handed over to Jared Sparks, the original editor of his letters. \u003cbr/\u003eSparks gave away some of the leafs and when they ran out cut others into fragments.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of them might have been handed to English geologist Sir Charles Lyell, whose descendants owned the house in Suffolk.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It fits the format of the other fragments of the speech that have come to light. It is definitely Washington's handwriting and Jared Sparks writing on the side. Unless you see it in person you can't actually authenticate it.
