Medium of Carter with dissidents \u003cbr/\u003eVeteran Cuban dissident Gustavo Arcos Bergnes, died on Tuesday aged 79, according to a close family friend. \u003cbr/\u003eArcos, was a former Fidel Castro loyalist who participated in the attack that launched the revolution, then served as an ambassador with the new government before being imprisoned for counter-revolutionary activities.\u003cbr/\u003eClara Villar, a close family friend and neighbour of the Arcos family, and the woman who answered the phone at the Calzada y K mortuary near his home, said Arcos died in Havana at 1140 (1540GMT) on Tuesday. \u003cbr/\u003eThe exact cause of death was unknown, and exactly where he died was not immediately clear, but Arcos had been hospitalised recently for respiratory and kidney problems.\u003cbr/\u003eArcos died while Castro, his arch nemesis, was out of power after temporarily ceding the presidency to his brother Raul Castro following intestinal surgery.\u003cbr/\u003eWith his own health failing, Arcos told The Associated Press in a May 2005 interview that he feared he would not live to see a Western-style democracy take root in his homeland.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I do hope I will see the end of this,\" he said then, \"but I'm not sure if I will.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBorn on December 19, 1926, in the small central Cuban town of Caibarien, Arcos was studying diplomatic law at the University of Havana when he first met Castro.\u003cbr/\u003eDeeply opposed to the government of Fulgencio Batista, Arcos joined Castro's ill-fated 1953 assault on a military barracks that launched the Cuban revolution. \u003cbr/\u003eArcos was shot in the right hip and left partially paralysed.\u003cbr/\u003eImprisoned, the survivors were later freed under a pardon and Arcos travelled with the group to Mexico to organise a rebel army.\u003cbr/\u003eKnown by the pseudonym \"Ulises,\" Arcos travelled throughout Costa Rica, Venezuela and the United States gathering money and munitions for the movement.\u003cbr/\u003eThe other rebels, meanwhile, travelled back to Cuba on the yacht \"Granma\" to launch a guerrilla war. \u003cbr/\u003eArcos' brother Luis was among those killed by Batista's forces when the boat landed.\u003cbr/\u003eArcos was named Cuba's ambassador to Belgium after the 1959 triumph of the Cuban revolution, but soon became disillusioned by the growing authoritarianism of the Castro regime.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They shot a lot of people,\" Arcos told The Associated Press in May 2005 of the summary trials held after the revolutionaries took power. \u003cbr/\u003eBy the time Arcos returned to Cuba in the mid-1960s, the government had turned socialist.\u003cbr/\u003eArcos began expressing his discontent privately and was soon accused of being a counter-revolutionary. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen he was released after three years in prison, the government refused his request to leave the country.\u003cbr/\u003eArcos and his younger brother, Sebastian, became involved in the Cuban Committee for Human Rights, formed in 1978 as one of the first groups of its kind after Castro took power almost two decades earlier.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Arcos brothers were imprisoned in 1981, for trying to leave the country illegally. \u003cbr/\u003eSebastian Arcos, who became a leading rights activist in his own right, died from cancer in 1997.\u003cbr/\u003eShortly after his release from prison in 1988, Gustavo Arcos replaced the committee's executive director who had been forced into exile. \u003cbr/\u003eIn subsequent years, pro-government mobs occasionally gathered outside Arcos' home to chant insults.\u003cbr/\u003eThrough the committee, Arcos issued reports about human rights complaints to international organisations and distributed copies of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on the island.\u003cbr/\u003eHis health began failing in recent years as the old bullet wound in his right hip made getting around increasingly difficult. \u003cbr/\u003eThe committee offices in exile, particularly in Miami and Madrid, began taking on a more central role.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite Arcos' increasingly lower profile, he still occasionally showed up for major events, including a 2000 gathering with American senators and a 2002 meeting with former US President Jimmy Carter.\u003cbr/\u003eHe also joined veteran activists in signing a letter condemning an Aril 2003 crackdown that rounded up 75 dissidents.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter more than four decades of struggle, he never wavered in his opposition to Castro's government, or his belief that revolutionary leaders had taken a wrong turn when they embraced communism two years after assuming power.\u003cbr/\u003eArcos
