To recognise a practice that was unimaginable and that is that pituitary glands were collected from corpses without really checking if those were safe. To recognise that that practice took place in France after 1985 when it was said for a long time and the American authorities saw that - that it was dangerous (a dangerous practice)\"\u003cbr/\u003e12. More of people coming out of audience\u003cbr/\u003eSeven doctors and pharmacists went on trial on Wednesday for the deaths of more than 100 young people who died of a brain-destroying disease after being treated with tainted human growth hormones.\u003cbr/\u003eHundreds of family members packed the courtroom where the defendants faced charges, including manslaughter and deception, following a more than 16-year investigation into the deaths of at least 110 young people from Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, or CJD.\u003cbr/\u003eLea Letheno whose son, Benoit, died aged 26 after being treated with the tainted hormones told AP Television that the doctors involved \"allowed pituitary glands to be collected from corpses in psychiatric hospital wards when under the law it was forbidden\", adding \"they made mistakes\".\u003cbr/\u003eLetheno said the process was presented to them at the time as routine, and she never thought she \"had anything to fear\".\u003cbr/\u003eFrom the 1960s through the 1980s, hormones collected from the pituitary glands of human corpses were used to treat thousands of French children whose growth was stunted because of a deficiency in the secretion of growth hormone.\u003cbr/\u003eThe programme ended in 1988 after contaminated growth hormones were linked to CJD - three years after the United States and Britain stopped the practice because patients had contracted the fatal brain disease.\u003cbr/\u003eThe case stems from a single complaint in December 1991 by a mother whose 15-year-old son was among those who died after getting the treatments. The case snowballed as others filed complaints.\u003cbr/\u003eInvestigators raised questions about shoddy collection methods, noting that untrained workers were sent to extract the hormones, as well as the methods used in preparing the hormones for medical use.\u003cbr/\u003eProsecutors say that by 1985, scientists were warning of a link between the hormones and CJD, and that the French programme should have been halted earlier.\u003cbr/\u003eTreatment since 1988 has been done through synthetic hormones.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of the defendants are now over the age of 80 but Marie-jose Herrault from the Victim's Association told AP Television they should not be allowed to escape justice because they have not had the \"pleasure of spending time with their children and grandchildren\" taken away from them.\u003cbr/\u003eA lawyer for the Victim's Association said he believed it is an important trial because it needs to be recognised that \"a practice that was unimaginable\" took place in France after 1985 when it was considered in many scientific circles to be dangerous.\u003cbr/\u003eIf convicted, six of the defendants face up to four years in prison depending on the charges against them. \u003cbr/\u003eOne defendant, Fernand Drey, a pharmacology professor at the Pasteur Institute, is also charged with corruption and faces 10 years.\u003cbr/\u003eThe trial is expected last until
