When you feel it, you run your finger up there and you feel this funny little kink and it's consistent in the majority of them. We believe that the bending iron that he used also had a kink in it and thus each rib would have a crack or a very hard burn mark in it, so when the lights are out you can run your finger up there and say 'it might be a Strad, but let's turn on the lights to be certain.' \"\u003cbr/\u003e11. million dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eThe violin, known as \"The Hammer,\" was created by Antonio Stradivari in 1707, and still remains in a beautiful state of preservation today.  \u003cbr/\u003eVirtuoso Elizabeth Pitcairn, whose great-uncle once owned the violin, played the instrument for a media preview on Thursday. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says the violin is \"easy to play and the notes spark instantly and immediately\".\u003cbr/\u003eShe says there are three things that characterise a Stradivarius: \"a beauty of sound, the power and projection of the violin in a concert hall, and the ease of execution,\" she said. \u003cbr/\u003eOne of the distinguishing characteristics of Stradivari violins is an unusual divot, or 'kink' on the side of the violin's body.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There's an odd little kink in Stradivarius' work... that is when he bent the ribs in the C bouts, in the upper corner of the ribs,\" explained Kerry Keane, Department Head for Musical Instruments at Christie's.  \u003cbr/\u003eKeane believes that the 'kink' comes from the bending iron Stradivarius used.\u003cbr/\u003eThe instrument was made when Stradivari was 63 years old, during his so called 'golden period' which lasted from 1700 till 1720.  \u003cbr/\u003eOf the 620 surviving Strad violins, only eight remain from this period, including \"The Hammer.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe record for a Stradivari violin at auction is 2,032,000 US dollars, for an instrument called \"The Lady Tennant.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"The Hammer\" will go to auction on May 16th at Christie's auction house in New
