You've got the dentine underneath, the dentine is softer than the enamel. Now the part of the tooth that comes out of the gum, the enamel is very, very thin there, so if you keep brushing your teeth when it's been softened because of these acidy drinks and sports drinks, there's loads of...high sugar, something that's high sugar that converts to acid and you brush your teeth directly afterwards, you will remove that enamel, you will expose the dentine and then you start getting sensitive teeth.\"\u003cbr/\u003e24. We're trying to get materials that actually stick onto dentine, because you don't want to drill any deeper when you have these abrasions, or these erosion cavities because it's very close to the nerve. Close up of the remnants of orange vitamin tablet dissolving in glass  \u003cbr/\u003eWe take fizzy vitamin supplements to improve our health, especially if we want to boost our vitamin C levels, but we could also be doing irreparable damage to our teeth.\u003cbr/\u003eDentists say these effervescent drinks are often so acidic that they have the potential to do as much harm as other soft fizzy drinks.\u003cbr/\u003eThe reassuring, some would say refreshing sound of vitamin C.\u003cbr/\u003eBut dentists warn that if you take one every day you may be weakening your teeth and leaving them open to decay.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's a problem Dr Mervyn Druian sees all to frequently at his busy London practice in the United Kingdom.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Druian the problem is that we all take care over sugary foods and sweets because we understand the link between them and tooth decay.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen Druian notices some wear and tear in the enamel of one of his patients, he begins to question her closely.\u003cbr/\u003eShe drinks fruit juice every day and brushes her teeth every morning after breakfast.\u003cbr/\u003eDruian says this is the problem.\u003cbr/\u003eMany people start their day with fruit juices, energy drinks and soluble vitamin supplements, most of which have a high level of acidity with softens the enamel.\u003cbr/\u003eIf they brush their teeth soon after taking these drinks they can damage the enamel which protects the teeth.\u003cbr/\u003eOn his computer Druian shows patient's photographs and points out deep grooves in the front two teeth.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says when teeth get this damaged the pain and sensitivity can become intolerable.  \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Druian \"sometimes it's so bad that you actually have to take the nerve out of the tooth, it's so exquisitely painful and the nerve is then damaged.\"\u003cbr/\u003eStudies from the University of Helsinki show that dissolvable vitamins can lead to teeth being harmed this way.\u003cbr/\u003eThe erosion of the enamel is caused by the citric acid which is also found in lemonade and colas.\u003cbr/\u003eDruian says the enamel on our teeth is \"bit like glass, almost like porcelain and if you scratch the surface and lose that gloss\".\u003cbr/\u003eHe says \"the part of the tooth that comes out of the gum, the enamel is very, very thin there, so if you keep brushing your teeth when it's been softened because of these acidy drinks and sports drinks, there's loads of...high sugar, something that's high sugar that converts to acid and you brush your teeth directly afterwards. You will remove that enamel, you will expose the dentine and then you start getting sensitive teeth.\"\u003cbr/\u003eDr. Druian is convinced the problem is becoming increasingly common at this practice and the British Dental Association confirms enamel erosion is becoming more widespread.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says even dental products and technology is being adapted to cope with the growing problem of erosion.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Helsinki scientists first carried out their tests on eight different varieties of effervescent vitamins in the 1980s, but similar tests have been held with sports drinks and other fizzy liquids.\u003cbr/\u003eThey discovered that the vitamins also draw minerals from teeth, weaken them and leave them more porous and more susceptible to decay.\u003cbr/\u003eThe British Dental Association's (BDA's) museum catalogues not just how dentistry has changed over the centuries, but also how our complaints have changed.\u003cbr/\u003eIn times past, poor hygiene and widespread poverty meant that many people considered themselves lucky if they still had teeth left in their heads when they died.\u003cbr/\u003eNow most of us hope to keep out teeth, but as a BDA educational poster illustrates, our 21st century tastes and habits mean we are sometimes damaging our teeth without realising it.\u003cbr/\u003eIronically when we take vitamin supplements we expect to improve the health of our bodies.\u003cbr/\u003eThe BDA's scientific advisor Damien Walmsley says we can continue to take vitamin tablets and they can do us good. \u003cbr/\u003eBut we must take care not to brush our teeth until our saliva has had the chance to harden the enamel softened by acidity.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says this can take up to an hour after we've consumed the drink.\u003cbr/\u003eProfessor Walmsley says we can also rinse our mouths with water, or eat things which are \"more of an alkaline taste and I'm thinking of things like milk, I'm thinking of things like cheese, a little piece of cheese would help to neutralise the acidity.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe British Dental Association says anything with a lower pH value than 5.5 is capable of causing erosion over a long period, or if it is taken regularly.    \u003cbr/\u003eThe Helsinki tests soaked cows teeth for 100 hours and all of them caused teeth to lose minerals.\u003cbr/\u003eThe pharmaceuticals giant Bayer is one of the market leaders in vitamin supplements.\u003cbr/\u003eIt has pointed out that many people still have a nutritional gap which these solutions manage to fill, especially because \"Some people find it difficult to swallow tablets and capsules and vitamins taken in the form of a drink are a useful option for these people\". \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Bayer the study is not comparable with the way the vitamin drinks are normally consumed.\u003cbr/\u003eIt says \"teeth used in trials were submerged for 100 hours in vitamin drinks. In reality, this would never happen with ordinary consumption, as the drink is generally consumed in a swift, short way with little time in the mouth\".\u003cbr/\u003eWe also don't know the health of the teeth used in the trial, so believe this latest research needs to be treated with caution.\u003cbr/\u003eVitamins and minerals are essential substances, vital for good health. Though they should be obtained from the diet, evidence from the national dietary surveys1 demonstrates that significant proportions of the UK population do not achieve recommended amounts.
