Mid of OraQuick box\u003cbr/\u003eThe US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first over-the-counter HIV test on Wednesday, allowing Americans to check themselves for the virus that causes AIDS in the privacy of their homes. \u003cbr/\u003eErvin \"Magic\" Johnson, the former NBA (National Basketball Association) Most Valuable Player and HIV/AIDS advocate, called OraQuick a huge milestone in the fight against HIV.\u003cbr/\u003eJohnson, who is a paid spokesperson for the company, said that in the 21 years since he first announced that he was HIV positive, one of the biggest hurdles in the fight against HIV/AIDS has been getting people tested. \u003cbr/\u003e\"In the HIV and AIDS fight we needed an in-home kit. Because the stigma behind going to the doctor or to a HIV and AIDS clinic to get a shot, for some people - probably millions of people, they just didn't want to do it,\" said Johnson. \u003cbr/\u003e\"And so now we are going to take that fear of going to a clinic or a doctor away from them,\" he added. \u003cbr/\u003eThe OraQuick test detects the presence of HIV in saliva collected using a mouth swab. \u003cbr/\u003eThe test is designed to return a result within 20 to 40 minutes. \u003cbr/\u003eGovernment officials estimate one-fifth, or about 240-thousand people, of the 1.2 (m) million HIV carriers in the US, are not aware that they are infected. \u003cbr/\u003eTesting is one of the key means of slowing new infections, which have held steady at about 50-thousand per year for two decades. \u003cbr/\u003eFDA officials said the test is aimed at people who might not otherwise get tested.\u003cbr/\u003eJohnson said the test will especially help the African-American community where there is a stigma in getting tested.\u003cbr/\u003e\"In our black and brown community there has always been excuses in why people won't go to the doctor to get tested. Now we are taking all that away from them,\" said Johnson. \u003cbr/\u003e\"You can do it in your own home, you don't have to worry about it,\" he added. \u003cbr/\u003eFDA stressed in its approval announcement that the test is not 100 per cent accurate. \u003cbr/\u003eA trial showed the home test correctly detected HIV in those carrying the virus only 92 per cent of the time. \u003cbr/\u003eThat means the test could miss one person for every 12 HIV-infected people who use the kit. \u003cbr/\u003eThe test was accurate 99 per cent in ruling out HIV in patients not carrying the virus. \u003cbr/\u003eThat means the test would incorrectly identify one patient as having HIV for every five-thousand HIV-negative people
