in Afghanistan despite pressure to muster more troops for Iraq.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Success in Afghanistan is our top priority,\" Gates told reporters during meetings at NATO headquarters in Brussels, his first visit since taking office last month.\u003cbr/\u003eIn his talks with NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, alliance officials said Gates stressed the importance of the Afghan mission and gave no indication that the plan to send 21,500 additional US troops to Iraq will lead to reductions in the American contribution to NATO's mission in Afghanistan.\u003cbr/\u003eThe United States has about 20,000 troops in Afghanistan. \u003cbr/\u003eAbout half serve with the NATO force of 32,000, while the rest run a separate counter-terrorism operation.\u003cbr/\u003eGates made an appeal for
