Various of Paul Bremer with Governing Council\u003cbr/\u003eThe US-led administration in Iraq will end by June after a transitional Iraqi government is selected and assumes sovereignty, the Iraqi Governing Council said on Saturday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe announcement was made following talks between the council and the chief US civilian administrator, Paul Bremer, who returned on Thursday from Washington after talks with President George W. Bush and senior national security advisers.\u003cbr/\u003eFaced with escalating violence in Iraq, the Bush administration wants to speed up the handover of power to Iraqis -- dropping its earlier insistence that the Iraqis draw up a new constitution before the Coalition would transfer power.\u003cbr/\u003eCouncil member Ahmad Chalabi, appearing at a news conference with other members, said the selection of a transitional government should be completed by May. \u003cbr/\u003eThe government, he said, would be \"internationally recognized\" and with \"full sovereignty.\"\u003cbr/\u003eCouncil President Jalal Talabani said the transitional administration would be selected after consultations with \"all parties\" in Iraqi society.\u003cbr/\u003eCouncil members also said the plans called for a permanent constitution to be drafted and an elected administration chosen by the end of 2005. \u003cbr/\u003eThe end of the US administration would not necessarily mean the departure of all American troops. However, Talabani said they would have a new status.\u003cbr/\u003eSunni Muslim council member Adnan Pachachi said the US-appointed Iraqi Governing Council would notify the UN Security Council of the timetable for creating the new institutions.
