But in fact, they are just waiting for the earliest buses, because it's better than taking minibuses. There are still minibuses operating at midnight, but they may cost more. Wide people walking into McDonald's\u003cbr/\u003eMcDonald's is no doubt a popular place for burgers and fries. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever, it's no longer just a restaurant - across Hong Kong it's become a favourite hangout for night owls.\u003cbr/\u003ePeople with late-night shifts, teenagers looking for video-gaming friends, and people who can't afford rent, are among those who find a safe haven under McDonald's 24-hour golden arches.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the city that never sleeps, McDonald's neon lights shine for the people who need temporary shelter for the night.\u003cbr/\u003eBut these Hong Kong residents aren't necessarily homeless or jobless.\u003cbr/\u003eThese young gamers are looking for company - fellow enthusiasts to play with. \u003cbr/\u003eDubbed \"McGamers,\" they find McDonald's to be much more than a fast food joint. \u003cbr/\u003eAt 2230 on a Friday night, about 6 people, mainly young men, are to be found playing PlayStation Portable (PSP) in a 24 hours McDonald's in Lok Fu, a residential area in Kowloon.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of them are sitting in a group while some play alone in a corner.\u003cbr/\u003eA gamer who stepped out the shop at 01:30 in the morning says he finds McDonald's to be a convenient place to play games. \u003cbr/\u003eLiving in the neighborhood, Alexandra comes down to McDonald's 2-3 times a week at night after work. Usually he stays for half an hour each time.\u003cbr/\u003eBefore this McDonald's turned 24 hours, he used to play at his company with collegues.\u003cbr/\u003eSome residents in the neighborhood find the burger sanctuary to be a nuisance.\u003cbr/\u003eResident Peter Ho says he feels playing cards and games is \"not appropriate for a restaurant.\"\u003cbr/\u003eStill, other residents aren't so bothered. \u003cbr/\u003eResident Tsang Kok-chung says it's not a big deal, as long as customers don't annoy other people.\u003cbr/\u003eThe restaurants can also provde a shelter for sleepover customers.\u003cbr/\u003eAt 03:45 in the morning in Causewaybay, a popular tourist area, 6 people were sleeping inside a shop, each occupying a sofa chair next to the second floor window.\u003cbr/\u003eSocial worker Shiu Ka-chun says the trend shows how the Hong Kong daily buzz is lasting later and later into the night.\u003cbr/\u003eShiu says the night-owl habits of Hong Kong locals creates the need for more 24-hour businesses.\u003cbr/\u003eOf course it's enticing - the restaurants have air-conditioning for the hot and humid summers, and well-lit areas for studying and gaming.\u003cbr/\u003eShiu says tired workers would rather sleep in the store's chairs, and go home on the early morning bus, rather than take the more expensive minibuses home around midnight.\u003cbr/\u003eThose who have jobs but can't afford rent, temporarily stay the night in McDonald's until they can pay for a place of their own.\u003cbr/\u003eShiu also says it's not fair and correct to call these customers \"McRefugees\" -- a term imported from Japan, where a growing number of working poor have been spending the night at McDonald's.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's because some of them only stay there occasionally.\u003cbr/\u003eIn fact, the popularity of McDonald's as a nighttime hub has made the company increase the number of 24-hour locations to 55 out of their 200 Hong Kong outlets last year.\u003cbr/\u003eMcDonald's Hong Kong bureau says it welcomes customers to visit the restaurants at any time.\u003cbr/\u003eThey say they \"haven't received any complaints regarding customers staying in the restaurant for a long time.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSuitably, the McDonald's Hong Kong slogan is \"Come down to the Mac tonight.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFor the tired, the hungry, the
