About seventy six thousand Jews were deported from France by the Vichy regime, which...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eFrench/Nat \u003cbr/\u003eFrance's Roman Catholic Church apologised on Tuesday for its silence during the systematic persecution of Jews during the Second World War. \u003cbr/\u003eAbout seventy six thousand Jews were deported from France by the Vichy regime, which supported the Nazi occupation.   \u003cbr/\u003eOnly a fraction survived.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is an unprecedented apology by the French church.  \u003cbr/\u003eMore than a thousand Jews and Christians gathered for the ceremony on the grounds of Drancy, a wartime internment camp outside Paris. \u003cbr/\u003eDrancy is often called \"the antechamber of death\" because most internees were transported to Nazi concentration camps. \u003cbr/\u003eFood was scarce and hygiene virtually non-existent - many children, elderly and sick people perished. \u003cbr/\u003eHistorians have repeatedly pointed out that the French Roman Catholic Church was indifferent to the suffering of Jews.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe church had a complex relationship with the puppet Vichy government. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the early days of the war, most of France's bishops embraced its policies, which promised a return to spiritual and moral values. \u003cbr/\u003eBy apologising, present day church leaders are supporting the request by Pope John Paul II that Roman Catholics face up to past sins. \u003cbr/\u003e (French)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Today we confess that this silence was a mistake. We recognise also that the church of France at that point failed in its mission to educate consciences and thus bears with the Christian people the responsibility of not having offered help immediately, when protest and protection were possible and necessary, even if there were countless acts of courage later on.
