Wide shot court \u003cbr/\u003eAn American working for a British newspaper, on Wednesday pleaded innocent to charges he knowingly published false information on alleged political violence.\u003cbr/\u003eAndrew Meldrum, a correspondent for the British newspaper The Guardian, faces two years in prison should he be found guilty by the Harare magistrate's court.\u003cbr/\u003eWednesday's trial marked the first time one of the 12 journalists charged with violating media laws has been prosecuted. The media laws coupled with new security legislation have made critical reporting of the government a crime.\u003cbr/\u003eThe trial is seen as a  test case of draconian new media laws aimed at stifling free speech in Zimbabwe.\u003cbr/\u003eTwo Zimbabwean colleagues who also work for The Guardian have been charged as well but did not face trial on Wednesday.\u003cbr/\u003eMeldrum is accused of publishing a false story alleging that Mugabe's supporters beheaded a woman while her two young children watched.\u003cbr/\u003ePolice later said the killing never happened. Another newspaper which published an article on the killing, The Daily News, later retracted the story, saying it was tricked by its informant on the story in a bid to discredit the
