hotel business is undergoing a revolution in order to entice the rich and fashionable to China.
Hoteliers keen to cash in on those looking for boutique glamour are searching out old temples and ancient sites in order to transform them from forgotten relics of a bygone era into luxurious tourist traps.
The red doors under the ornately carved entrance keep out the hustle and bustle of Beijing's busy streets.
This used to be the luxurious home of a powerful Qing dynasty politician more than a century ago.
It was among the first of the abandoned traditional mansions to be transformed to cater for the new tastes of China's elite.
It's created a big demand for Buddhist temples and historical buildings which can be restored and turned into luxurious boutique hotels.
The trend marks an extraordinary U-turn after a decade when thousands of ancient sites were demolished to make way for the skyscrapers that now line the Beijing skyline.
This hotel was founded by a woman called Du Ge.
She grew up in a "siheyuan" just like this hotel, a traditional Chinese compound of four units around a courtyard.
An increasing number of Chinese, foreign business leaders and visitors are again searching for a taste of traditional China.
The hotel caters to all these guests providing they can afford the new prices.
The rooms cost about 2,000 yuan a night ($300), that's the going rate for five-star hotels.
Du Ge decided to open the hotel after trips to Europe showed that traditional buildings were becoming expensive and very popular hotels.
The location of this courtyard, near the Houhai Lake, the Nanluoguxiang lane and the Drum Tower, was ideal for her goal.
In 2006 she invited two architects from Belgium and China to plan and build the renovation of this site, turning the courtyard into a ten bedroomed boutique hotel.
The Du Ge opened in August 2008.
It combines traditional beauty and style with the comforts of modern life including a Western bar and flat-screen televisions.
The Du Ge's managers says the majority of the guests are tourists from Europe and the US.
Every room is inspired by different elements of Chinese culture, like bamboo, Tibetan iconography and Mongolian carved latticework.
Adam Xie, Du Ge Sales Manager, says many of their Chinese clients are businessmen from southern China, who now want to experience the northern Chinese cultures and traditions.
The guests of the Grace Beijing hotel are very different.
The exterior doesn't appear opulent.
In fact it's based in a former crystal factory in Beijing's 798 Art District and was designed in the Bauhaus style by communist East German architects who came to assist China's push towards industrialisation in the 1950s.
In 1995 a group of local artists turned the industrial area into workshops and art galleries, and the 798 became most well known avantgarde area of Beijing.
The restoration was undertaken by European and Chinese architects and it opened its doors this year (2012).
The Grace Hotel's thirty luxury rooms are uniquely decorated in a style mixing classic Deco, Ming Dynasty dcor and contemporary Chinese influences.
General manager Yves Godard says their guests are a mix of foreign visitors, local artists, gallery owners and others from creative professions in to fashion, design and architecture.
This clientele is very different from guests who frequent the modern new imposing five-stars hotels which are bedecked with gold and marble.
The Temple Hotel is still being renovated, but it's already creating a great deal of interest amongst those looking to experience China in authentic surroundings.
It will have just eight exclusive rooms from September 2012.
This site encompasses 600 years of history.
Founded by Emperor Yongle in the Ming Dynasty of the 15th century, it started off as the imperial printing workshops where Buddhist religious texts were made.
In 1683 the Qing dynasty's Emperor Kangxi proclaimed Tibetan Buddhism was the official religion and the Zhizhusi Temple, known today as the Main Hall, was created.
The name in Mandarin means "Temple of Wisdom".
It became part of the Imperial Court, a place for ceremonial rituals and home of several "Living Buddhas".
When China's People's Republic was established in 1949, over three thousand temples like this were converted to civilian use and many of them disappeared, destroyed along with the modernisation of the cities.
At that time, Zhizhusi became a television factory.
Its altar still bears Maoist slogans used to rally the Chinese people during the Cultural Revolution of the 1960's and 1970's.
When it was rediscovered in 2007, it was in ruins, full of rubbish and forgotten amongst other discarded houses.
Now the aim is to restore the temple to its original form and preserve its history.
Parts of the building including the main hall are recognised heritage sites and protected by the government, so the restoration was entrusted to architects registered with the Beijing Administration of Cultural Heritage.
Scholars and high-qualified artisans are devoted to recovering the original Sanskrit paintings from the ceiling's wooden panels.
Most of them were burnt in a big fire.
The 3,500 square meter (3827 yard) venue includes conference rooms and galleries for art shows, as well as a restaurant and bar.
The Temple Hotel is hoping to attract both foreign and local custom.
One of the founders includes Belgian entrepreneur Juan Van Wassenhove who was first to discover this site.
He and his team are determined the restoration will be authentic enough to allow their guests to become a part of Chinese history.
Beijing,
