Tutsi soldiers and militants are being blamed for the killings.According to the U-S ambassador to...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eAt least 150 Hutus, mostly women and children, are reported to have been massacred  in a single village in northeastern Burundi. \u003cbr/\u003eTutsi soldiers and militants are being blamed for the killings.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the U-S ambassador to Burundi, Robert Krueger, the killings took place  between Wednesday and Friday last week.\u003cbr/\u003eThe death toll in the whole region could be as high as 450 in inter-ethnic violence which  has gripped this East African nation in the past two weeks.\u003cbr/\u003eThe report of the latest massacre of Hutu villagers will only increase fears among the  Hutu refugees who are desperate to leave the country and flee to neighbouring  Tanzania.\u003cbr/\u003eThe US Ambassador Robert Krueger described the horror of the massacre he found in  the area.\u003cbr/\u003eAnytime one is talking about a minimum of 150 people killed at one time... anytime one  sees what I have seen, babies whose heads had been bludgeoned, children whose  heads had been beaten with clubs, a small baby girl, as a doctor told me, whose  genitals had been stabbed by a bayonet, that's serious.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Robert Krueger, U-S Ambassador to Burundi\u003cbr/\u003eKrueger also pointed out that the killings were only the latest incident in a series of  violent confrontations between the Hutus and Tutsis.\u003cbr/\u003eIt has been very brutal. I reported, at the end of January, on 70 people who, I went out  and found dead in Budaganzi province and at that time none of this had been reported. I  went out and I personally photographed the bodies myself. I saw in one instance three  small children all of whom had been bayonetted in the neck. Their mother and  grandmother ... their bodies were thrown into a bananary and immediately adjoining was  a pig sty. The children had been thrown to die, the pigs had been left to live. \u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Robert Krueger, U-S Ambassador to Burundi\u003cbr/\u003eDespite the latest incidents, the U-S diplomat still believes that Burundi could escape  the genocidal killings that engulfed Rwanda.\u003cbr/\u003eI personally don't believe that Burundi will go the way that Rwanda went. I expect  democracy to survive. I think the people can work out their problems. I have never felt  that we were likely to see the wholesale massacre that Rwanda visited.
