veterans of the struggle for independence.\u003cbr/\u003eBut few signs of public enthusiasm were evident in the build-up to the anniversary.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to newspapers, souvenirs were scarce and were on sale in only two shops in the capital.\u003cbr/\u003eParliament was summoned for a midnight session to replay the speech by India's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, known as the \"tryst with destiny.\"\u003cbr/\u003ePakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif reportedly sent his Indian counterpart a note echoing an earlier speech in which he hoped for an end to the blood feud between their countries.\u003cbr/\u003eBut police in India said rebels marked the anniversary with violence, killing seven people in a train bombing in the northeast of the country.\u003cbr/\u003eThe attack was a reminder that the blood-soaked partition of Pakistan from India failed to quash the ethnic tensions straining the diverse and populous democracy.\u003cbr/\u003eUntil the last moment, details of the midnight ceremony were in doubt, reflecting what many critics called the late planning of the nation's golden jubilee by a divided and ineffectual government.\u003cbr/\u003eFor many Indians, the anniversary meant reliving partition, when the British India was splintered into Hindu-dominated India and the officially Muslim republic of Pakistan.\u003cbr/\u003eAn estimated half a (m) million people were killed in communal slaughter and more than 10 (m) million refugees were shunted across the border in the largest involuntary migration in recent history. \u003cbr/\u003eBut for those who joined the parade and gazed up at the fireworks and laser show in the New Delhi sky, it was a time to celebrate 50 years of independence in India.\u003cbr/\u003eNew Delhi, India -
